That said, I think the whole point of stuff like this or a thorsden or a monsterman is to show at least an attempt to comply with the laws.
There's a big difference in geometry between this and a Thordsen or mini 14 just look at a few photos. Definitely a pistol grip as the webbing of your hand is not above the top of the action.

Love the idea and your design though, great work.

I don't know dude, looking at google images of a thorsden, they look pretty similar to the grip position. Not identical obviously, I would imagine some patent issues would arise if they are. A thorsden doesn't appear to get the web all the way above the action as you put it, level with the top of the trigger yes, but just barely. And I think, by reading you comment, that's what you meant. Really just semantics here honestly. And over a first iteration in a CAD mock up. But its similar enough to be in the ballpark of the thorsden stock on looks, with some tweaking.

I don't say its the same. I get how you made that connection though, poorly worded on my part. I said they have a similar shape, as in, they all kind of curve below the rifle, hand wraps around, not a thumb hole, so it appears that you are following the law to make it featureless. I'm not saying its a hunk o walnut with the action bedded down in it. But if you showed this to someone who didn't know guns, they might find it acceptable... Like show it to the idiots that wrote these asinine laws in the first place. They would have no clue what is going on.

The design is cool. I think, for a precision AR shooter that does say PRS matches, this would be interesting to develop further. But to bring to market, I think these would be cost prohibitive honestly. Unless you relent and go to a glass filled nylon like pretty much everyone else. But that seems like it would defeat the OP's purpose of coming up with this... I don't get the impression that he wants to even do a run on these from his post

First off thank you to the OP for attempting to make something new to help. I have a thordston stock on one of my rifles now and have for awhile. A couple things lately I've been thinking of that would make it better that you might consider on your design are bringing the but pad closer to center on the buffer tube. (Higher) doing so would require length which for me would be great. That's the other thing, maybe some spacers that you could add or remove for different lengths. Due to it not being a pistol grip anymore I know I would be more comfortable with some added length. Myself I would even consider removing the section you have below the buffer tube instead of the lowest section. Maybe also consider bringing the grip up a little more for a flatter grasp. Again great looking stock though. Good luck with the final design.

A square pistol grip will not be very comfortable to hold.
I have run 500+ rounds of .308 through the Thordsen stock and it is rock solid.

I like it. Do you have a target weight your going for?

It is a beautiful thumbhole stock. I love the look. But what I think is needed is an improved version of the hammerhead.
sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

                    Thumbhole stock.. not featureless..

The thumb wraps around the area lower then the bottom of the receiver (where the trigger hole is)..

That's what I see at least..

I have a fix for that.. if you don't mind a notch in your buffer tube that can't be seen with the stock installed

The other fix is using the Magpul fixed rifle stock with a rifle buffer and tube.

With billet parts, the cost is inversely proportional to the weight (opposite of cast parts). As it sits right now, the stock is ~9 oz. I had a version that was about half of that but it required a lot more machining. I am going to make a prototype and see how it feels to me.

I had seen this in the AW definition:
"A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon."

And thought that most people would not find this "conspicuous".

                            I had not seen this:
“Pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon” means a grip that allows for a pistol style grasp in which the web of the trigger hand (between the thumb and index finger) can be placed below the top of the exposed portion of the trigger while firing.

As I have been playing with quick mockups, I have noticed that since my hand is rotated more (30 degrees more in my design), the web of my hand wants to be above the trigger naturally. In my personal experience, I never use the "top of the exposed portion of the trigger". I you want to be squeaky clean with margin, it would be easy to cover the unused portion of the trigger (maybe a hindrance for bulky gloves).

Anyway, the design is still evolving but based on the current version and my hand, my web is above the top of the exposed portion of the trigger.

Very nice work, but the 2nd version still is a pistol grip, albeit at a very slanted angle. It "allows" a pistol style grasp when being fired. Just because you don't use it that way doesn't change the fact that it's still a pistol grip by definition. All future designs should keep in mind that all hands need to comply, not just yours.

At some point the "pistol grip" turns into a "rifle grip". OP is getting pretty close to the Thorsden stock configuration with his newest iteration and the Thorsden stock is legally NOT a pistol grip. Don't know where the dividing line is but its around there somewhere...
