IWI Tavor AW legal length

If anyone registers a Tavor as an assault weapon, can it now be legally changed to the original 26 inch configuration? I am on the fence about what to do regarding registration or featureless options. I did a search but did not find anything on it, so sorry if this is a repeat.

Yes, you can reduce it to 26" OAL. Barrel must be 16" OAL. Also should be able to remove BB etc. once registered.

Probably. We won't really know until DOJ releases their AW regulations.

There's no law against it and DOJ is not allowed to write laws.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean they won't try.

This is not fact yet.

Wait until February or even later for better understanding. You have all of 2017 to get registered, no need to rush in to this.

If I was registering, I would wait until July/August to file paperwork.

It officially becomes an assault weapon on Jan 1. It doesn't need to be registered to be classified as an assault weapon.

So for now, it does not need a fixed mag, and has to be >26" OAL starting on Jan 1.

Not exactly. The new AW guidelines the DOJ just released say that as long as it was purchased befor 1/1/17 in the current legal configuration your are exempt of AW status til the deadline of 1/1/18. We basically have a year grace period to make featureless or register etc.

The law will exempt from punishment a person who possessed a bullet button assault weapon prior to January 1, 2017, if specified requirements are met:

Prior to January 1, 2017, the person would have been eligible to register the assault weapon pursuant to subdivision (b) of section 30900.
The person lawfully possessed that assault weapon prior to January 1, 2017.
The Person registers the assault weapon by January 1, 2018, in accordance with subdivision (b) of section 30900.

The way I read that is that on Jan 1, our BB semi's become assault weapons but we are exempt from punishment so long as we owned it before Jan 1. We then have all year to configure it so it doesn't need to be registered, or register it.
