Range/Target Question

Wasn't sure what location to put this thread but it's related to centerfire so here it goes:
I have a day off tomorrow and one of my friends wanted to go out and shoot my AR with me, he's never shot before so I wanted to take him out where it's free and not indoor so it's easier to explain everything before giving it a go and just in case he gets bored quick and it's not a waste of $17.
Was thinking of going to Oroville range but wasn't aware you had to bring your own targets until about 10 minutes ago and now I obviously don't have time to build one before morning.

Now to get to my question, would it be a dumb idea to just go out and fire off rounds downrange without using targets so he gets a feel for what it's like?

Make shift steel target; something fun and gratifying about hearing the "ping" after hitting it from a distance.

What do you reccomend for a "quick" makeshift target?
I thought I read on Oroville's facebook that only paper and clay were aloud at this range?

Never been to the range you're referring to.

I assumed since it's free, you're out in the open. I was thinking PVC pipe frame and you hang some steel.

Or give up the steel and hang large paper targets from a PVC pipe frame.

If you stop by a Target (pun intended) or something like that tomorrow morning you could pick up a container of those little rubber dinosaur figurines. Set 'em up and knock 'me down.

Just be sure to pick up after yourself.

Cardboard box, roll of masking tape and a stack of cheapo paper plates.

Almost free and 100x better than shooting at the dirt.

Might head to spenceville instead as it's closer, just don't want to deal with the hoodlum crowd I've been hearing about.
