My Future AK RAW: or how to make a folder RAW legal

Well, I pulled the pin and bought a High Standard Hungarian AK63D under-folder from Atlantic before the panic ensued, It came with the stock fixed and a mag-lock on the trigger guard. I went featureless with one of Monkeeboi's kydex wraps. I didn't like the Hungarian wood, so I put a Bulgarian palm swell handguard set and a Com-Block bakelite pistol grip on iy.I do plan on registering it, though, as I already have a featureless semi-stock Saiga IZ132 7.62x39 AK.

I will put the mag lock back on 12-31-16 so it can be registered. The problem is, while an AK RAW can have a folding stock, it still has to be over 26", otherwise it is a Short Barreled Rifle under the penal code and would be a felony. Folding AKs run 25 1/2" to 25 7/8", however.

My answer was to get the Tapco cage flash hider. I replaced the slant brake (which is worthless on semi-auto), with the Tapco cage flash hider. It is now 26.2" overall with the stock folded. The bonus is that the Tapco AK cage flash hider is the same diameter as the slant brake, so my Hungarian bayonet will still fit.

With a blocked 10/30 Tula bakelite

    It can shoot, too.

Am I missing something, or is that a rifle with an evil feature (flash hider) and no BB?

LOL. Good eye, but this week end, I was at my daughter's in Medford (OR) when I worked on it, so it was OK! I always take my pictures on that oriental carpet thing when I take them at home. It had a mag lock on, and the grip wrap removed before I came home yesterday. I want it to have the mag lock on anyway at 12:01 AM, 1-1-2017

I just wanted to avoid any accidental AWs. It's nice being able to go out of state to work on guns.

Does the flash hider need to be pinned/welded? Otherwise, isn't it still an SBR if the flash hider isn't permanently attached?

Only needs to be permanent if barrel less than 16".

Thanks, I do appreciate it. It is handy that I am only 4 hours from my daughter's place in Medford. Her husband and I go up into the Siskiyous to go blasting.

There's no pin needed for overall length. If there was, you wouldn't be able to remove the stock from some rifles.

I have heard that too, but just didn't want to take a chance....

Really? If that's the case, I may consider RAW'ing my Tantal and M70AB2. Both are over 26" with the brake screwed on. I was hesitant as I wasn't 100% on welding/pinning the brake.

Don't forget CA wants a 30" OAL, not 26" specified by the Federal SBR law. CA measures with stock folded. One of the reasons you see long muzzle breaks/flash hiders on the AK platform.

I was under the assumption CA RAWs could be under the 30" OAL as long as they're over the 26 OAL (since that's an ATF SBR) and have a min 16" barrel.
