Converting a Norinco Hunter to a Galil/Valmet Clone

Hello, Calgunners! I recently acquired a brand new Norinco Hunter. The rifle is currently featureless but I would like to change that. I was told that the Norinco Hunter can easily be converted to a Galil or Valmet Clone. Does anyone have any advice for me about how I should go about doing this conversion? Any suggestions on where to begin or things to consider? I JUST WANT THE JOB DONE RIGHT! Thanks!

The Norinco Hunter is a banned by name rifle in Calif... Check Appendix "C" of the assault rifle flow chart. Possession is a felony.

I am aware of that. This is a very special rifle. It isn't technically a Hunter because it doesn't say Hunter anywhere on it. It is a Norinco Hunter for all intensive purposes. Even has the Norinco logo on it.

If you want to do it right, get an Apex kit and receiver heal stub. Ar15 barrels should be able to do the weld and install the galil parts. I am assuming you want to keep it 7.62.

Thanks for the info, Kalieracer! I definitely want to keep the gun chambered in 7.62. I am less concerned about the price of the conversion and more concerned about the quality of the conversion.

Only real hard part is welding the heal and the receiver holes for the trigger guard and refinishing. Randall is an expert welder and machinist. If he can't do it due to his customer schedule . Jeff at Hillbilly or Turbothis (Matt Yemens) or Jim Roberts at JBI can do the work too. They all do great work. I do caution if you want the galil safety (grip) that is a ton more work and time to get done.

Just an idea, a more correct conversion would be to a Valmet M62s / m76

My personal intent is to have a reliable AK variant. From what I have read Norinco produced some of the highest quality AKs ever imported in the US.

I would leave it as is, these are not very common rifles, it's a nice sporting rifle in the original configuration shown.

Any Gov Arsenal made AK is going to be a good gun. I am going to say that any imported AK is going to be rock solid. That being said, the changes you are going to make won't take any reliability away, it's all cosmetic.

It might just be a factory marked gun with just the importer name that is not listed. I think Polytec also made one of these too

I totally understand why you would say to leave it as is. I plan on shooting the **** out of this gun so I am not really concerned about it's value as a rare rifle or anything in that sense.
