I looked this up only to find I want a PTR even more now; thanks!

Don't be too upset man. I'm kicking myself for not buying this thing before 2014...

I bought a PTR91 FR. 18" bull barrel (I have other toys to run and gun with so it doesn't need to be light), "tactical" fore end which takes proprietary rail segments, 1913 rail on top for optics, plastic grip frame because that's what comes with it.

+ HKs have good accuracy for military rifles with their free-floating barrels (the hand guard is supported by the cocking tube and barrel trunion).

+ I like shooting with iron sights, and the HK's are very nice.

+ The roller delayed blowback mechanism is ammunition insensitive, which one guy online illustrated by loading up some .308 black powder cartridges.

+ The roller delayed blowback mechanism is mechanically interesting. I already owned gas guns with direct impingement, short stroke piston, and long stroke piston operation.

0 the trigger is heavy but can be improved (my HK94 clone is decent). Williams and Bill Springfield can do that.

          - Ergonomics are a little sub-optimal. The stamped magazine well has no funnel like on an AR forging, and isn't wide open with the magazine rocking in as on a FAL. There's no last round bolt hold open. The charging handle is a reach. Without a paddle it's a real stretch to the magazine release.

Take that with a grain of salt - It's still in jail and I've yet to shoot one which is ultimately the point.

PTR omits the paddle release on all their California models, although it's compatible with bullet buttons - you just remove the matching contact piece on the magazine release when it's disassembled for BB installation.

Check out Alphacatarmory.com, he has a bunch of PTR's showing available and he's a good guy. I just bought a PTR 32 (7.62x39) from him. It also looks like he has a DS Arms FAL.

                VEPR .308 or PTR-91?

I respectfully disagree. PTR91's are made using US mfr parts, except for possibly a few bits like pins, mag release etc. on HK contract tooling.
Early PTR's used some German surplus parts like the bolt head and carrier.
The "receiver" is folded steel like the original HK. The trigger housing on most but not all PTR's is a polymer navy type trigger housing. Some PTR's now come with a steel trigger housing. Not disparaging the VEPR, as it too is an excellent weapon, just clarifying some points about the PTR.

"Parts kit builds" generally refer to demilled f/a rifles rebuilt on a new s/a receiver with enough new USA parts sprinkled in to assuage 922r.

                    PTR is sooooo cool.

Got the shorter 16" classic k model with wood. Haven't shot it yet, but looks amazing!

VEPR - Clean and sexy looking.

                      PTR -heavy and ugly looking.

But I'm sure ether one will work great.

Own both and Vepr .308 is a superior platform and less likely to fail in the long run. Much better iron sights as well.

You really prefer the sights on the Vepr to the PTR? I've never been a fan of AK style sights, I really prefer peep sights.

Yes, AK sights are faster and if you know how to shoot, there's nothing wrong with them.
Russians prefer open leaf sights as its much easier to clear mud from in harsh conditions.

Vepr's rear sight is also easier to adjust for windage.

Landon has over 70 various PTRs in stock including the GIs. He's always been helpful in the past about making rifles CA compliant.

The PTRs are oh so pretty and I do miss them but my vote goes to the VEPRs.
