AK easy semi-manual bolt hold open for range?

Maybe somebody has done this but I couldn't find anything or a reason why this is a bad idea.

I'm thinking of a way to get the bolt to hold open at the range (easier for wife to shoot).

1 - Put bolt hold open followers in the mag. This will ensure that the bolt stays open on an empty mag.

2 - Cut out a tab in the safety right where the charging lever stays on the bolt hold open.

3 - Once mag is empty and still in rifle and bolt is open, simply flip up the safety lever to hold it open.

4 - Release mag. Bolt is still open because it's being held by safety. Insert new mag.

5 - Drop safety down and shoot!

You can get a mag with last round hold open carrier.

Yeah, the Krebs safety and the CAI RAS47, and maybe a few other AK variants come with this bolt hold open indent in the safety lever. But the indent is too far back - the bolt holds a bit further forward on the magazine follower bolt hold open so I'd have to make this cut myself.

I'd rather my AK not have an extra hole in it with that selector lever.

I just stick a chamber flag in the chamber during cease fire.

It's all my range requires as well.

Why mess with something that ain't broke?

Even just sticking an empty cartridge in the action (sticking out and keeping the action open, not chambered) works well if the range doesn't require a commercial chamber flag.

Yeah but the bolt closes as soon as you take the mag out.

Well yes, but my method theoretically doesn't require you to charge the handle upon re-insertion of new mag. Just insert new mag, drop the safety lever, and commence firing.

As already pointed out, "your method" has been around for many years. I simply pointed out a way that doesn't make any modifications to do.

I don't see this making it easier at all. Quite frankly, much more complicated if not more difficult. The ONLY valid reason I have ever heard for a bolt open mod if for a training class that requires it.

I'll have 8 Croatian made bolt hold open steel magazines available for sale in a week or two.

those cut out selectors are great until one lets loose on your finger..ask me how..does not matter if a DIY or a Krebs..they will at some point slip. At the range I use chamber flags. Cheap and easy.

i think youre missing the point of it. Yes the bolt closes, but during a defense scenario it lets you know that you should reload.
