What to do with this firearm?

I'm asking for a friend here. His father passed away not too long ago and left him with a few firearms, a OU shotgun, a bolt action, and a HK94. He's wondering what his options are? Can he keep it? Can he sell it? If he wanted to sell it, how does he go about doing it? Also would anyone be able to tell how much it's worth? There's fire damage on the polymer pieces of the pistol grip and the stock.

Disassemble and hacksaw it right through the upper receiver in front of the rear sight. Good to go. A good genuine HK parts kit is prob worth $1500 in and out of CA.

Otherwise, pull the pic and get a lawyer, not many legal options, but a whole lotta options to go to jail...

Is it a registered AW? the estate can still sell that Hk94 out of state. There is a time limit, but I can be done. They are pretty good money.

If it was never registered, then just sell as a parts kit.

HK-94 is a 'named' 'assault weapon', so cannot be made into a legal configuration for CA.

If it were registered, this would apply:
        30915.

Any person who obtains title to an assault weapon registered under this article or that was possessed pursuant to subdivision (a) of Section 30630 by bequest or intestate succession shall, within 90 days, do one or more of the following:

        (a) Render the weapon permanently inoperable.

        (b) Sell the weapon to a licensed gun dealer.

        (c) Obtain a permit from the Department of Justice in the same manner as specified in Article 3 (commencing with Section 32650) of Chapter 6.

        (d) Remove the weapon from this state.
        Otherwise,
        30600.

        (a) Any person who, within this state, manufactures or causes to be manufactured, distributes, transports, or imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives or lends any assault weapon or any .50 BMG rifle, except as provided by this chapter, is guilty of a felony, and upon conviction shall be punished by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170 for four, six, or eight years.
        ...
        - cannot legally move it anywhere.

What he needs is a Real Lawyer™, and that right away.

Since that's the only useful course of action, closed.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
