APF & Alexandria Pro Fab are sister companies. I don't know what their exact incorporation situation is, but from what I've read they're separate entities but share many common products.

The PTR & brass mangling is highly over-stated. Yes they damage brass more than a 308 AR would, but the brass is still reloadable. I do often. The more difficult part is actually retrieving the brass, mine ejects it consistently 10 yards forward of the firing line & it doesn't work well with the brass catcher I have (the kind that wraps around the ejection port; works fine for ARs though) If you don't reload then it's not an issue. And btw, PTRs work fine with steel cased ammo. Mine loved Tula.

Josh...FNAR is the one you want for that price range IMO

That's what I just did, signed up for notifications on both 18" and 21". Is the 21" that much better?

I wouldn't say it's better at all, but is what I went with as I wanted a traditional FAL first. At some point in the future I'll also get a para model with the folding stock and shorter barrel. I'd say get whichever you can if you live in Ca before the deadline.

This is all based on sheer looks so take it as very subjective....

I'd say if you are looking to keep it plain jane, including potentially a PARA stock, get the 21" or 18".

If you are looking to eventually go nuts and add the DSA quad rail and railed top cover and a modern optic, go with the 16" if using a red dot or a an 18" with a scope. The long thin 21" barrel looks goofy extending that far out from the quad rail IMO.

The FAL with a standard handguard is not front-heavy, so I can only imagine how much felt recoil and muzzle climb the 16" must have. The 21" is not bad at all. Surprisingly soft for a 308. If you're going featureless with a brake, then that may tame the 16" a little more.

I have limited experience with battle rifles, so I don't know what I'll like. I have a PTR91 coming (18" no rail, getting wood furniture) so maybe I should go longer... I really don't know.

I wasn't really considering 16", too short IMO.

21" for me, especially as a sole example of the weapon in your collection.
When I think or hear FAL, this is what I think of. Have fun.

16" allows you to play Tetris with the guns in your safe easier.

If either of them comes up for a reasonable price I'll probably pick it up, even though it has to go on the CC (no interest for now at least).

16" is just awfully short for a 308. If I want a short 308 I'll use my RFB, it even uses the same mags...

You should be able to pick up a SCAR 17 for that price in the classifieds here?

$1000 might get you a nerf scar 17 in the marketplace.

Possible. I would say buy now. Nerf SCARs could hit $3k+ in December.

But its just not worth it. I mean for $3 grand you could get a lot of water balloons.
