I enjoy shooting my S&W 15-22, but I don't shoot .22 for the fun of recoil.
There is a little bump, not much.
I just got a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire for it so need a trip to Angeles range.
.22 gives you more time at the range.
Edit: get the 10-22 and you can modify it all you want if you shoot it for low recoil fun.Last edited by Garv; 10-30-2016, 7:26 AM.Originally posted by Kestryll:

If you're shooting rifles for the sake of recoil... no, switching to a 9mm isn't going to be much "better". Go get a garand or something. I wouldn't be shooting an AR in 5.56 for the recoil either.
I shoot .22lr so I can eliminate recoil and muzzle blast, so I can focus on fundamentals instead.Comment

.22 are amazingly fun, and the trick is to train with your .22 and develop into your AR.
Challenge yourself if it isn't that fun. Can you place 5 on 5 Shots at 75 yards in 2 secs flat?
9mm has a little more kick and a lot more sound. If you are looking to make big booms why not go above your 223 and not down in caliber. 308? 30.06? Get a Mosin that will make you want to shoot a .22 again.Comment

Shooting 500 rds at an Appleseed using an AR-15 is not a waste.
Sounds like you had a "fun gun" but chose not to use it.
How did you do at the Appleseed? Rifleman score?
Using your own rifle is always more fulfilling that using someones loaner.
The marksmanship part of the Appleseed program is about marksmanship improvement. That is where the fun comes from.
You want recoil? buy a mosin nagant. BOOM!
My personal opinion, take it for what it's worth, Iron sights are the only way to go at an Appleseed. Many disagree.

OP, I'm not trying to be a dick but did you earn your Rifleman patch?
Project Appleseed is about learning to shoot a rifle like a marksman, not just for fun and kicks and loud booms.
There is no comparison between an AR and a 10/22 (except the diameter of the round)
I have two 10/22's, one synthetic and scoped and the other wood with Tech Sights and GI sling (looks like a little M1 Garand). Both are fun to shoot IF you like shooting small, inexpensive rounds for accuracy.Comment

A standard AR at an Appleseed is a blast. Go again and bring your 5.56. It's worth the ammo cost imo.

Did you learn something about our heritage as a nation of riflemen and the cost of freedom? Did you learn the skills necessary to improve your own marksmanship? Are you a guy with an AR-15, or are you now a rifleman? Shooting offers many more rewards than just recoil.
For me, shooting anything is fun. Shooting anything well is even more fun. But if you don't enjoy shooting .22s then don't buy one. There are too many people out there buying .22 ammo as it is.Last edited by Mayor McRifle; 10-30-2016, 7:52 AM.Anchors Aweigh

I felt the same way for years.....till I started taking kids to the range. It gets expensive real quick taking 3 kids under 16 to the desert. So I bought a conversion kit for my AR. Then a Henry rifle. Then a MP5 in .22...then a conversion for my 1911.
For me Having fun shooting .22 is a mindset. It's shooting for the sake of shooting. It's shooting for the sake of accuracy. Now I even look forward to it. If I want kick, I'll pull out the hunting rifles or shotguns.
Either you're ready for it or you're not. No biggie.Comment

I didn't mean that recoil is the only thing that makes it fun to shoot I was just saying the .22 didn't feel close to at all as fun as shooting my AR15, I was just hoping it would be more fun so I could get a 22 to practice my Shooting skills on the cheap so I'm wondering if it's better to get a 9mm rifle for practice if that'all be more fun.
As we've said, if you want recoil and a big boom, then just go with a rifle in a cartridge that has more of that. 9mm isn't going to provide it. Mayor McRifle asked if your marksmanship improved after the appleseed class, did it? Did you learn anything? Or were you just there to shoot? I don't mean to sound like a dick, as there's nothing wrong with shooting for the sake of shooting and making noise(everyone shoots for ****s and giggles at some point), but it sounds like you have little interest in marksmanship. Are you actually challenging yourself? Because it sounds like you just want to shoot for the sake of shooting, just cheaper.Comment

For the cost of the scorpion you can buy a .22 again Mosin and a 18" AR upper to send out 1,000 yard shots. Now that's fun...Comment

.22 is all skill, no thrill. Practice is boring, but crucial.Comment
