    Iranian G3 Rifle

LAV shooting an Iranian G3. Some great slow mo of the G3 during the firing sequence. May be of interest to current ptr91 owners. Enjoy.

Great video, thanks for posting. I couldn't even imagine what this gun would be like on full auto or even burst. I'd end up shooting at more birds than my intended target. I'm anxious to see how my friend's M1 Socom shoots, since I keep hearing that the G3/PTR is a soft shooter for .308/7.62..

From the slow mo, you can see most of the recoil is from that heavy BCG slamming into the buffer into the stock. I've shot a G3 with the HK21 club foot stock and buffer, and it makes a world of difference.

I've also shot a G3 with an FA pack, and it is uncontrollable. In semi, G3 feels fine. I like it's recoil over the FAL, actually. IMO, the only way to use a G3 on FA is to bipod up and treat it like a BAR.

Great vid thanks for sharing, but the scar17 is the softest shooting 308 i've shot, the PWS brake helps a hell of a lot though, my AR with PWS had huge noticeable difference in recoil!

I've shot a f/a G3. Its very hard to control standing. Didn't get to try it prone off a bipod. By the 3rd or 4th round I was off paper. Cool to do once, but I'm quite happy with my semi auto clone I have a German .22 cal G3 conversion/training kit for my PTR. Now THAT would be a riot in f/a.

Same here, however my PTR with a pcs heavy buffer and hk21 recoil buttpad is incredibly tame. I need to rent a f/a scar 17 one of these days and see how controllable it is in fun auto.

When I first handled the PTR I said to myself that either this is a rifle masquerading as a machine gun, or a machinegun masquerading as a rifle lol. Yeah that buffer is big, heavy and hits hard.

I am so jealous of you guys that have shot the G3 in FA. Like you guys I wouldn't see the need for FA or even burst unless you were in a squad trying to provide suppression fire or something.

In any case, tell me more about this HK91 recoil pad; do you think this would be a worthwhile addition to the PTR? I hope I can find it. I think with a better trigger and this pad of yours the gun would be very manageable to shoot...

If you ever make it to Las Vegas, skip the casino and head over to Battlefield Vegas with your credit card. They'll even pick you up in your hotel in a humvee. They have a f/a G3 for rent there. I dumped about $600 there a couple months ago.

                Here's the buttpad

                Here's the buffer.

I was just going to look up Vegas lol. As for the buffer, is it true that the PTR's now include the heavy buffer from the factory? Also, what's the chance that the current rifles already have the HK21 buttpad? Is there a way to tell them apart?

I have no idea if the newest ptr's have the heavy buffer. I doubt it though. The buttpads are completely different. Standard G3/hk91/PTR91 buttpads are a thinner hard plastic. These are actually rubber and wider and flatter. The two together make for a very comfortable shooting .308 IMO. If you get one, easiest way to remove the old buttpiece is to clamp it between a rag in a vice and rock the buttstock sideways. The pad is held on by 2 heavy spring clips that clip around the pin storage holes in the stock. Installing the new pad just line up the clips and smack it with a mallet. Super glad you're happy with your PTR.

Thanks for the information and the support. I will get that butt pad and look into the buffer; maybe look into the trigger also. Honestly, even as it is now I can learn to accept and enjoy it as it is.

I don't know why but this gun fascinates me; I'm into this way more than I ever was into my Colt AR and that says a lot. I truly enjoy this gun!

LOL. When I got my PTR, I went out and shot 500 rounds through it. I had a perfect purple imprint on my shoulder/chest as if I'd dipped the butt in purple ink and stamped it on my body. I put on a tank top and displayed it proudly.

I've had the pleasure of firing german G3 and Iranian made ones while doing basic training back in Iran. Out of 20 rifles that we were firing with, maybe 5 were germans (from Shah's era, late 1970s) and rest were made in Iran (late 90s); The Iranian made ones jammed constantly even with single-shot: One out of 3 was a jam. The one I was firing was German and after 20 years of abuse, still worked like a charm.

                          Just my 2 cents.

500? Wow. After 100 rounds I am DONE for the day...
