CETME L Home Build, HMG and Inrange

When the Apex kits came out a year or two ago I bought a kit on a whim, not really knowing anything about the receiver situation. Well, there was little to nothing out there and it seemed like this kit was going to be in the box indefinitely. Then I read Hill and Mac Gunworks where going to sell some Cetme L's made from receivers they had manufactured.

I jumped on the chance several months ago and the flat and bending jig as well as the weldment pieces where excellent quality and the kit really flew together with no hassels, it's a lot like any HK rollerlock build.

But the real big thank you goes out to Inrange TV that did a SUPERB 12 part build series that covered every facet of the build from soup to nuts. The videos are so good they should have charged money for them, they are up for free on Full 30 and youtube. The video series could be used as a blueprint to build any HK too, it's that good. I would have been totally lost as to how to complete the semi-conversion without this build series. Ian and Karl are true Mensches.

I worked out the dimensions and printed a BB out, it's a simple cap that fits around the mag release (actually a new printed steel material).

I parked it in a charcoal grey and then painted with a Duracoat WW2 OD green. It's not really the right green but its as close as I could match, the original OD green is a little less "olive". But it looks ok, I wish I had some nicer condition furniture.

A cool design to be sure, have not fired it yet, I will post a range report. These were a Spanish design that is basically a scaled down version of an Cetme A,B,C in 5.56. It's however not an HK 33 which it shares 0 parts with. It's about a pound lighter than my HK 33 and much slimer. I have read these where designed in the 80's and used from the late 80's to 90's. They performed so badly in Desert Storm they where promptly retired. I think most of the problems where with the magazines, it uses most standard Stanag's but the Spanish decided to make their own magazines.

So far it feeds great, the mag drops free, and it feels fantastic. Kudos again to HMG for making a flat and jig that bended and fit up like butter, literally 0 issues.

If anyone needs build tips or the BB let me know. I've been busy building all my old kits in prep for the 1st.

Got a stellar .020 bolt gap to boot, this one is hard to tune because there are no parts available.

Did you use a Prexis or HM flat / receiver?

HMG, if you look at the writeup Ian did on the Forgotten Weapons website the Prexis is nearly unusable.

I was thinking about building one but their summaries about their final results seemed kind of hohum. Cool looking rifles though and the price is right

Other than collecting there is not much value to it, but it's fun and interesting. I spent around $700 total on the build which is not cheap but it's a great story and turns heads at the range. Not exactly the rifle I would grab when the Zombies invade.........

I'll be better able to tell what it's worth after a few hundred rounds.

Any Stanag metal mag, like a GI, works. I had this oddball 10 round DPMS plastic mag that is a complete pos but it works in it, lol. No Pmags or Lancers fit.
