DRD Takedown Rifle vs. Cry Havoc Tactical QRB system

    Hello gents,

With the crap hitting the fan on Jan 1 I am trying to build the rifle collection I thought I had years to create in a relatively short period of time. Since being introduced to this sport I always thought it'd be neat to have one of those DRD take down rifles, the ones where you can detach the barrel and hand guard with basically the release of a clamp (drdtactical.com). You can see these various DRD rifles in youtube videos.

However, these things aren't cheap, hell, the Kivaari (338 Lapua) is a cool 7k.

I recently saw from 'Cry Havoc Tactical' (honestly the names, its like 13 year old boys in charge of marketing) (http://www.cryhavoctac.com/) that they have developed some modification that can be added, it appears, to any AR-15 and effectively do the same thing as what the above break down rifles do. The mod is an easy $325 though some tooling is required (looks modest) and there look to be some limitations on barrel and handguard diameters.

I have heard no one comment on this QRB system. Anyone seen it?

If I go the Kivarri route I drop 7k .... (bear in mind that while this is clearly a nice rifle this is kind of a novelty buy) ... If I plan to install the ARB as a novelty an it works than this could be added to any rifle down the road, frees up that 7k, maybe I stockpile lowers instead BUT I am dealing with having to learn the install or ship out for it (added cost).

Im leaning towards the Kivaari just for fewer headaches. But what I am asking you is: 1) what would you do, 2) anyone have ANY experience with this QRB? 3) anyone here fire any of the DRDs? Maybe I should just forget the whole novelty and make life easier.

THanks for your time sorry for the long post.

    Smart marketing.

You tailor your ads and attitudes toward your target market. Also smart to appoint a marketing manager around the same age and attitude as customers.

For yays or nays, I'd check the industry section on arfcom, and maybe the general discussion group.

Not trolling / flaming, honest question; how the heck is a setup like that faster & more efficient than just using the standard AR takedown pins?

I know on some rifles they can be pretty tight, but on most ARs, popping the two takedown pins is a cinch, and probably even easier than that Cry Havoc contraption.

Seems like all that system does is introduce a lot of complexity, additional points of failure and non-standard parts to an otherwise proven design; the standard AR.

It's your money, so buy whatever makes you happy, but I just don't see it...

One last thing; If you're willing & able to drop *$7K* on guns, dude....you'd be really unwise to blow that all on ONE rifle. You could buy yourself just about a safe full of guns for that...well, at least 3-4 quality ARs, if not more.

How in the world is the DRD system functional? I thought we had to torque our barrel nuts to something like +40ft lbs?? Can some one explain this because either the general (and my) understanding is wrong, or the DRD product is severely lacking. I can't imagine how clamping a hand guard bring the barrel nut into spec.

I've always been fascinated by these things from an engineering prospective. The gimmick here isn't that it's easier to take down. The gimmick is that it's shorter when taken down (about 6.5" shorter).

For ultra pricy gimmicks you could add the AR folding stock adaptor to the same rifle: http://www.lawtactical.com/ar_foldin..._m_p/99312.htm

You could fit an AR-15 into a laptop bag assuming you leave the computer behind.
