You have until 2018 to decide if you want to register as a AW or do something else.

I'm not so sure that a a Magpul AFG to GTG. I have them and I think reasonable arguments could be made that a Pistol type grip is possible.

There is NOTHING definitive in statute or case law that states this is the case.

AFG on featureless is definitely a grey area, there is nothing definitive out there to rely on either way.

I did not want to be a test case, so I went with a handstop. Still grey, but safer in my opinion.

Note that some bipods can be used in ways similar to the use of a VFG; that's another option. For example, an Atlas Bipod on the ADM mount can be used like a VFG with the thumb-break method of Magpul fame if you swivel the legs towards the butt of the rifle.

Sorry guys if this is obvious, but is this considered illegal on the front of an AR?

This whole pistol grip thing is strange, im wondering the purpose and how its safer to ban this.

That would be a problem on a featureless build.

OK on a bullet-buttoned rifle through the end of the year.

OK on a fixed mag rifle in 2017 and beyond.

OK on a RAW in 2018 and beyond.

I am not sure about a pistol build.

That definitely falls into the pistol grip family

I thought you could only put a pistol front grip on a pistol if it were past a certain length?

Correct a pistol has to be over 26 in OAL to add a VFG (that 26 inches does not include the muzzle device unless its permanent). When you are over 26 in and add a VFG it technically stops being a pistol and becomes just a "firearm". This is Federal law not CA.
