Wilson combat will no longer ship their mags to Ca, I tried several weeks ago. I received a few from calegalmags and while they may only hold 10 rounds, you still need to grind off a section in the mag. When I got mine I loaded them up with some 300 grain hollow points and just pushing them out with my thumb, the edge of the bullet would hang up on the magazine. In regards to Lancer mags, they are not a 10 round mag as they can easily hold 11 rounds. All they did was stamp .458 socom on them and out the door they go. They don't even take the time to change out the follower and just leave the 5.56 follower in there. CMMG won't ship them directly either but they will ship to a local gun shop if they will sell them to you. If you do go the Lancer route, add a single round follower over the stock follower (use something like epoxy) and it will make it a true 10 round mag.

Do you honestly think a Cop , D.a.or Jury of your pers is going to know or be able to tell the difference . Here is a 458 socom mag here is a 5.56 30 Rd mag . What's the difference use all the same parts one is stamped 458 Socom . Don't over think it. Also a 30 round Ar mags are not illegal to own yet .

So, if you are going to assume that the DA/Jury will have a hard time distinguishing between types of magazines, wouldn't you want to run mags that help with this and that offer you some sort of legal defense?

For those who legally own 11+ round mags you might as well use those in your .458/.50 build if you so choose. Since many people don't and can't own 11+ round mags the question becomes how best to acquire legally defensible 10 round .458/.50 mags that happen to look just like illegal to purchase (for these individuals) 30 round 5.56 mags.

I think the best way to look at .458/.50 mags is the same way we look at flash hiders and muzzle brakes. When we are distinguishing between hiders and brakes we look first at how the product is advertised and then we compare certain features of the product that are more likely to cause the product to be classified in one category or another.

The same can be done for 10 round .458/.50 mags. First, if the mag is marketed and sold specifically as a 10 round .458/.50 mag then it is at least somewhat defensible. Second, if it has a special distinguishing feature that visually sets it aside from a typical 30 round 5.56 magazine, such as laser etching with the large caliber round type and capacity, that makes it even more defensible, especially to LE in the field. Finally, if the mag has a special flat follower that is specifically designed for large calibers and that doesn't hold 5.56 well you should have a very solid defense if you run into trouble.

Yes, there is some grey area here. Yes, you could still get put through the ringer even if you do everything right. But, there are ways to approach this/things that can be done that significantly reduce your risk. Why would you not want to do this?

a unmodified 30 rnd 5.56 mag is not really designed for 458 as the forward lip of the box generally snags the edge of the brass where the bullet meets, one way to fix it is to take your dremel and round out the forward portion just a little bit, maybe 1/8 of an inch. this will give you much more reliability and is a clear distinction between 458 and a 5.56 magazine.
