Thanks gents, well maybe ladies too idk.. You guys were very insightful, which also means I still have a lot to think about. Money is always an issue 200 bucks is 200 bucks. It begs the question if that extra 2 inches on the bcm upper is more worth it for better accuracy than 2 inches less, but in wylde?

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy... it has everything to do with velocity. If you want to punch targets at longer distances (600+ yards)... you need as much velocity as you can get as that plays into wind drift which is literally the hardest part of shooting long range. Elevation is a science, and its easy.

If you intend on sticking with the RDS/Mag combo, which IMO is a terrible fit for either one of those uppers for anything past 300 yards... just get the 18 and save yourself $200.

556 vs Wylde... I doubt you would notice a difference at all unless you are buying high BC 223 match ammo for 60 cents to $1 per round or hand-loading your own. Wylde doesn't make your rifle more accurate, but it has a potential extract a little more accuracy out of better ammo.

Considering its the optic that really drives the application... if you setup with a CQB optic, hold over shooting is your only tool for elevation adjustments, you wont have the level of consistency you need in your point of aim. In addition to that, a magnifier just makes the same dot even bigger... and adds a requirement for eye relief as its a magnified optic. Basically you now have all the disadvantages of an RDS, with the disadvantages of a scope, mixed into one inconvenient package...Yay? Why not just get a 1-4x scope at that point?

Vortex RDS are available in 4 MOA or 2 MOA dot depending on the optic... for the sake of argument lets just say its the 2 MOA dot. At 800 yards, that dot will cover 16" of your target.

The mechanical accuracy of my ammo and rifle combo actually shoots tighter than the size of the dot in that RDS. If you want accuracy, you need a different sighting system.

Point being, get the 18... have a better recoil impulse for off hand shooting and more manageable rifle, which is still plenty good for any realistic distance using an RDS or even a low power variable scope.

Used the $200 saved to buy a scope.

Sold to extremeX! Aero should hire you. Yeah I was just wondering; I was going to save the rds/mag combo discussion once I got used to the rifle with irons. I just said it cuz it may help discussing the better option upper.

No worrie dude, RDS with magnifiers used to be very popular but like most fads it died. They looked cool in stupid movies so the shooting community dove in head first before learning the hard way how inconvenient and ineffective they are together.

I don't have any adjustable scopes for cqb. Do have one on my 308. I'd rather get a fixed 3X for urban engagements or just a red dot with the ACSS reticle. (Looking at you primary arms).

I have never had an issue with the Aero ones I have.
