    Tromix 458 upper question

I'm pre-planning a 458 SOCOM build, and leaning towards Tromix based on what I've heard, and their product offerings. My question is, will I NEED to get one of their upper receivers which have the enlarged ejection port, or will the ejection port on a standard AR-15 upper receiver be big enough for the brass to clear?

Any other vendors I should be considering?

Most manufactures that make the 458 upper will enlarge the ejection port. If you piece meal it, not sure what you will come up with. I ordered mine a while ago and with any luck it will be here in another month or two. I went with Wilson Combat for the complete upper.

Wilson Combat has a drawing on their web site if you want to mod your own upper receiver ejection port.

Yeah I looked at Wilson Combat, but they're quite a bit more than the Tromix, like double the cost. Not sure if the cost difference is justified. This will be a CQB gun, no more than a couple hundred yards I'm sure.

Joe Bob Outfitters has a Radical Firearms 458 complete upper for $499, which is very tempting. The main reason I'm considering Tromix is because they offer a 14" barrel and a brake which brings the total barrel length to just over 16", and I really like the idea of a short barrel for this one. Then again, I also thought about ordering the Radical upper and having the barrel cut back to 14" and ordering the brake from Tromix, and the total cost will be $560.

Wilson is not using the approved reamer, so they are basically screwing the developer out of his deserved compensation.
          Nor is Radical.
That said, any mil spec upper receiver can be have the ejection port opened up.

You will need to either enlarge the ejection port yourself (top and bottom, look for the template online) or buy one of the uppers that have already been milled from Tromix, Wilson or some other vendor. The stock .223 sized port will not work reliably with the much fatter .458 brass.
ETA good choice with Tromix; Tony makes a quality product and he'll stand behind it.

I went with the tromix complete upper and 14" barrel, then pinned and welded the break on. Tromix customer service is great. I also have a radical firearms 458 but like the tromix just a little more.

I like your ..... floorplate. I'm bouncing back & forth between getting the 458 SOCOM or the 450 Bushmaster.

I went 458 since I reload 45/70 and have plenty of bullets. Bought floorplates on eBay

I also have a Tromix and Tony just have be a warranty repair after like 2 years for free. Couldn't recommend them enough. And yes, get the upper with the enlarged port.

Thanks. I reload for a few 45/70 also, seems like a good enough reason to go that way.

Well, I had some issues with Wilson Combat so I cancelled the back order and went with Tromix. Called them today and the upper ships out tomorrow. First, WC refused to ship any 10 round 458 socom mags into CA because they told me I have the ability to change the follower and make them 30 round 5.56/223 mags so they won't send them. Second, the back order I placed did not look like it was going to happen anytime soon and I was told that they might have some out by the end of the year, they just don't know for sure. While they have plenty of complete rifles in stock for 2800.00, the upper I ordered was 1300.00 and I don't see the difference of 1500.00 coming from the lower.

The difference is they want to sell $2800 rifles but don't want to sell $1300 uppers.
The other $1500 is not just the lower.
It also covers the 11% excise tax on the total price of the rifle ($308) and puts some money aside for the $2250 ITAR fee they pay each year for being a manufacturer.

Granted, there are some costs that get spread out; however, I still don't see the lower costing more than a complete upper and that is with a WC factory trigger and forged lower. Oh well, not that it matters now as I went with the other brand.

I talked to Tony at Tromix about the 458 and the 375 socom...I wanted another upper for my lowers. Tony talked to me about the 375 and the longer range you can shoot it at, but it is a "wildcat" round and you have to reload for it. I ordered up a 375 socom upper from him on the 9th and it was in my hands on the 12th. A great company and great service....

I get the brass and bullets tomorrow so next week I should be shooting it.

                              Tony P.
