Well I just got my PTR91 last week, I can't wait to shoot it. I got from DD ranch in New York transfer to Calif. I just put the bullet button, and looking for a 10/20 mag. for I can shoot the rifle. To give you guys a range report. And I read about the rifle that all the parts are HK.

I love my PTR. It shoots just as good as my real HK.

HK911 top, PTR91k bottom. Magazine lock and 10/20's by me. Both have had triggerjobs done by Bill Springfield.

PTR91s are great rifles at a good price, but they're not the shooters that AR10s can be.

If you're planning to use your rifle with handloads for precision, then AR10 wins.

For battle-style rifles, the HK9x series are damned good. Also, consider FALs.

The AR-10 will be a lot cheaper to accurize if that is the way you are going, although the PTR can be made into a very accurate rifle as well. I'd give the nod to the PTR for reliability, but their fluted chambers do not like ammo that burns dirty. Ergonomics on the AR-10 are slightly better, but with optics the charging handle on the AR-10 is a real issue. The PTR charging handle, or rather the force required to operate it, is an issue all the time. Eat Wheaties

Correct, either the steel or aluminium mags.

PTR good accuracy, get a Bill Springfield Trigger job, drop in either a heavy buffer or MSG90 buffer and you're good to go. Oh and if you want to add a Harris bipod get the harris 2R bipod adapter drill out the first rivet in the heat shield, use a drill to counter sink the nut for the adapter and and then you'll be good to go

I would prefer the SAR 8 since it`s a liscense built HK91 from GREECE, imported by Springfield armory. more true to the original. my 2 cents

As far as accuracy, The PTR is awesome IMO. I was shooting 400yds through open sights on my PTR-91k (16" carbine) with great results. My friends who shot it were blown away. As far as reliability, mine has functioned 100% every round since new. For what it's worth, I had an AR-10 & a PTR-91 a few months ago. Now I have 2 PTR-91's & sold the AR-10.

I vote for AR10. Since we're stuck using some sort of CA approved mechanical magazine release contraption, rapid firing is probably not that important. For the same amount of money you can probably get a more accurate AR10 that a much better trigger and better potential for long distance shooting. Even a PSG1 trigger pack is no better than your average AR trigger and CLAW scope mounts are not cheap either.

If you could have only one, I'd go with the PTR91. It is built on HK Tooling and is the best HK91/G3 clone in the market today.
The PTR91 is also the best value IMO, because the price point is lower than an AR10. The PTR 91 also has better magazine availability because it can use CETME, and HK Mags. The Magazines are also dirt cheap!

The PTR91 is built with the HK tooling like mentioned above. I like my PTR91 however it can't compare with my .308 AR setup (DPMS). The AR10 is much more ergonomic and accurate. The PTR91 will fling your brass and you'll have a hard time finding it. The charging handle is a huge PAIN. Its probably my biggest complaint about the rifle. If you can only have 1, get a .308 AR rifle. I also have the FAL and its a toss up between the PTR91 and FAL. Now that I think about it, I think I prefer the FAL just because the difficult charging handle on the PTR91.

The charging handle issue with the PTR91 can be improved if you install an extended charging handle.
I've found that the increase gripping surface and leverage created really helps charging the rifle.
As for the Brass issue, I usually don't feed my PTR91 nice brass. It gets the Bredan primed Milsurp that I can't reload, or brass that's at the end of life.
Most recently I've been feeding it steel cased .308 since the price of ammo is so high.
I just make sure to pick a shooting lane on the right side so nobody gets shelled with hot brass.

What is your budget first off? For just a little more than what an ar10 upper goes for now adays, you can almost buy a PTR. If money isn't a problem the ar10 is a superior platform. It is innately more accurate, more ergo and much easier to accurize. The PTR is more of a battle rifle... I would compare it more to the FAL as stated before. It really depends on what you want to do with it. All 3 are great rifles and for the most of us that don't shoot past 200 yards... any will to the job just fine. M1a is also a great rifle but it sounds like you want an OLL.
