New to the Forum. First time AR question

    Hello all,
As the title says I'm new to the Forum and also have an AR question.

I recently put a deposit on a S&W M&P Sport 2. My local gun shop is going to work with me and hold the rifle while I get some DMV issues worked out. To be honest I had no intentions of buying an AR right now, but with all the recent CA Laws. My time table was pushed forward.

I've been reading alot of threads on here tonight. And I noticed people referring to owning a featureless rifle. I think I read on one of the threads saying a Ruger Mini-14 is exempt from the new CA laws. Which I don't think it is as it takes a detachable magazine.

If I'm incorrect and its exempt should I cancel my hold on the Sport 2? Of course that is saying I can even find a Mini-14 in CA.

I am a firm believer that these new BS laws are just another nail in our freedom coffin for law abiding CA citizens. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Yes the Mini 14 would be exempt as long as it doesnt have a flash hider muzzle device. You can modify the AR to also be featureless

That being said what would you have to take off the AR to be "featureless" ?

Featureless cannot have flash hider, pistol grip, adjustable stock, vertical foregrip

The Ruger Mini14 as other have mentioned, as long you don't have any evil features, will not be impacted by the new laws. A detachable magazine in of itself is not an evil feature.

A detachable magazine + one evil feature = evil by current and new CA laws.

Take a look at the flowchart. I suppose the flowchart will need updating when the new laws go into effect.

The AR15 you have a deposit on most likely has a magazine lock installed.

You understand, currently a locked magazine is NOT a detachable magazine. This is why you can have a rifle with a pistol grip, flash hider, Forward Grip, telescoping stock or flare launcher.

Starting 1/1/2017 the law changes. After that date, a locked magazine doesnt qualify as a NON-AW which allows you to have those on your rifle. You will have to remove ALL of those...a pistol grip, flash hider, Forward Grip, telescoping stock or flare launcher. Or register your Rifle as an AW.

The Mini-14 does use A DETACHABLE MAGAZINE. It also lacks a pistol grip, flash hider, Forward Grip, telescoping stock or flare launcher when sold in California. The Mini-14 is a featureless rifle.

The Mini-14 is the same as an AR15 configured without a pistol grip, flash hider, Forward Grip, telescoping stock or flare launcher.
