Removing flash hider without a vice

Hi everyone, so I finished my first build:

Only thing I haven't installed yet is the muzzle brake. I read I should hold the barrel in place with a vice that way I don't twist the barrel from the receiver as it's held by two pins. Is there any tips anyone knows of not using a vice? Or should I just take it to a shop and pay? Thanks.

Magpul BEV engages the barrel and not the upper, which relieves any stress you may place on it while torquing.

As far as not using a vice... ask your buddy to hold it?

Nevermind I ended up buying a vice anvil and barrel block set, $150 I'll probably only use this once, but better to use the proper tools I guess. But still if you've used a backyard method please share.

I just put mine in between my legs tight and took it off. Shouldnt be a problem. No evidence of bent barrel or accuracy problems.

Hmm maybe I should cancel my vice anvil and barrel block set with your method, I could use that $150 towards ammo instead.

Yup done it this way many a time. Sit at a chair, put the stock between your feet, squeeze with your knees, grasp the barrel with your off hand (and also guide/protect the wrench from slipping with the top of it) and use the wrench in the other... Should work for most devices that are not put on with a ton of force. Once it breaks free it should easily unscrew. Now depending on how off set the device is when you put it back on with a new crush washer a vise could come in handy.. but I have put them back on with this method, might need someone to help give it extra hold..

It's defiantly not the right way but its good in a bind

so, while not the "right" way to do it... I "torqued" my castle nut on my buffer tube using the between my legs method.... I am confident, it is tight.....
used the pistol grip and lower as the leverage point

yep.. u can also use your pistol grip to counter the twist by letting your calf hold it... done it many times..

If it is on tight, a good "rap" on the end of the wrench can break it loose better than brute force in most instances.
The same rules apply as far as preventing torque on your barrel. You want it held steady.
