Study the construction techniques, the quality of workmanship or lack there of. Fire it from different positions. Learn it's particular manual of arms for efficient reloading, chambering and unchambering.
Every student of firearms needs an AK pattern rifle in their rack. It's worldwide popularity, history, and distribution pretty much demands it.

If you're just wanting a fine reliable rifle, then your pretty well already set.

You should be a gun salesman, because I didn't even want an AK, but you make a really good point and now I kind of want one lol
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

Better sights and I'd be an AK owner. They just plain suck though. No way around it.

If you get one made in US like DDI brand - you're gaining accuracy, x39 punch and penetration, concentric barrel and reliability with AR type of build quality.

There is, if there's a will there's a way......but traditional sights are just fine as well, you just need to know how to use them effectively as they are designed for moving targets.

all the guys griping about the sights are funny. Irons are fine with my eyes, and I am no young whipper snapper. 400 m, ringing the gong all day long with my horny whore 10/63- no mods except a AMD65tech cheek adapter for my Romy wirefolder (btw, calgunners its pinned open for Kaballah Horus's pleasure).

If the sights are so bad why do the Russian mil, FSB, and Spetznas seem to have no issue with them at all? Frankly its all about the training.

              Again you guys are funny.

I own an ak and an ar. I think the difference is like the difference between a 68 chevelle(ak) super sport and a modern ferrari (ar). They both go fast, but in different ways, but still both leave a stupid grin on your face. One is fat and loud, the other is light and tight.
When me and my wife go to the range, she always bogarts my ar, and I happily let her while I blast s**t with the ak. And it's fun to hit steel at 300 with the cheap *** ak while certain guys with $2500 ar's are dropping $0.60 rounds off target.

funny I always thought of mine as a prom queen vs a biker chick.

I agree with your assessment on ammo costs. I love the look on their faces, when I am banging that gong at 400m.

Typically it's just parroted information passed around the gun forums.

I've go two wasr's. Sights are fine.

Many newer designs came after but none are better. After all the years it is as old as it is modern.
There's a reason why it is so popular nowadays even though it usually cost more then many AR's. Something that works and works really well is the reason it's so popular and in demand.
Aftermarket accessories are on par with AR, you can make one into whatever floats your boat from egros, cosmetics to ease/functionality.
With good optic hits on 400 & 500 yd targets are very doable.

Personally would take modded WASR over $4000 AR, but that's just me.
                      Lol

                          Yes, that is one thing.

I like my ak's but let's be real. "Just as modular?" "Just as accurate?"

Hitting a 30" gong with an AK while prone, at 400 yards, 6 out of 10 times isn't good enough. AK sights were designed to acquire a target and put automatic fire onto that target. With regard to a semi automatic rifle, which is what is available to us here in the Golden State, I find them wanting. Bottom line is, you have more than a few hundred yards between two equally trained adversaries, the guy with the AK dies first.
