detail strip and clean, it will only take about 30min.

the rifle is 50+ years old.

Your stock may be a replacement one installed during rebuild at some point in time, or have been sanded down enough to have removed any traces of the original cartouches. The Greek's used their own replacement stock's and those didn't have cartouches.

yellow paint is probably a rack number.

Detail clean and strip the rifle before using. CLP will probably not be enough to remove all the grease. I use mineral spirits to get it all off.

Stock either sanded or could be a replacement, need pictures to give better answer.

You need to strip the rifle to clean whatever cosmoline is in the rifle, but also so you can grease it yourself. Get yourself some Lubriplate or wheel bearing grease and properly lube the Garand (bolt lug recess, oprod recess, hammer, etc). Forget the CLP.

Well I have the next few days off so I will be sure to get everything cleaned off properly. Would the rack numbers be anything worth retaining if I were to refinish the stock? And would the dishwasher method take off the rack numbers since its only paint? I hope to get some pictures up by the end of the week.

I like Formby's furniture conditioner cleaner, rub down with scotchbrite type pad and will clean it right up.

I do not think removal of rack numbers hurts value.

You don't think the cosmoline needs to drawn out? It doesn't fell really sticky but I was going to try to refinish it with Tung oil after a bath in the dishwasher. I also need to pick up some mineral spirits at the hardware store so I can clean the metal parts. I have not been this excited with a gun purchase in a while. Yippy!!

Oh by the way the reciever is a 1943 build.

Bring a rag when you go to shoot--it'll work it's way out on it's own when it gets warm.

Personally, I'd leave the stenciled markings on the buttstock. It gives that rifle a lot of character.

Just buy another Garand that you can work on. Seriously. You think that Garand owners stop at just 1? I sent in another order for a Garand receiver today.

yes I am already itching to send in for another service grade but I need to take it easy and let my funds recoupe.
