    Noob to AR's- some questions

I am new to the AR platform, but have decided to take on building one based on a TM 80%. I already have this upper http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-1...ng-handle.html, this lower kit http://palmettostatearmory.com/moe-l...kit-black.html, and this bolt carrier when it was on sale with charging handle http://palmettostatearmory.com/palme...roup-8779.html. With all the new legislation in the works, almost seems that the only way to stay trouble-free with it is to build it manual action/single shot. I've read about adjustable gas blocks, installing gas blocks backward, crimping gas tubes, etc, etc. None of these fixes seems permanent enough to stay "legal". Is there a "permanent" way to make it single shot? I've looked at side charger uppers, but nobody seems to make one without the hole the gas tube passes through. Trust me, I've read the threads about neutering an AR, and I don't want to either, but also want to avoid trouble. Have the gas port in the barrel and upper receiver TIG'd shut? Permanent enough to hold until I can leave this state? Again, I don't like the idea, but don't want the trouble; and as a registered nurse, I can't afford a felony on my record.
Also, been looking at AR-10/308 80% receivers. I know the numerous jigs for a 308 are different than those for an AR-15. What I'm wondering is this, I have the tooling for an 80% Arms EZ jig. Many of the 308 jigs don't come with a depth guide. Are the specs for the fire control pocket and trigger holes the same between the two formats, which would allow me to use the same cutter and bits I already have, or are there differences? Visually to me the only difference seems to be the longer magazine pocket.

Try not putting a gas tube at all. This is a permanent fix as it will NEVER have gas blow back.

they are trying to get rid of 80% as well, so it really doesn't matter.... just build it.....
"It is currently CA legal to modify a double-action revolver into a single-action revolver and modify a single-action revolver into a double-action revolver.

CA DOJ BOF stance on modifying handguns only applies to dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistols and dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistols.
^It does not apply to revolvers, manually operated repeating pistols, and semi-auto pistols." ~~ Quiet

you are over thinking this and under thinking this at the same time.

Why build a rifle in the shape of an AR15, when you want a Bolt Action? Buy a Remington 700. Build a M24.

If you want an AR15, build an AR15 using the same technique everyone else is, because in that way you are doing... what everyone else is and there is always safety in numbers. No one has EVER said disabling a gas system makes it legal. In fact there have been comments that the gun is NOT in compliance, but simply broken. Go featureless or Fixed magazine. If the laws change then you change with them as we all will...STAY WITH THE HERD! If you are singled out from the herd, your lawyer will be better prepared to keep you out of jail with a tried and true defense. There are Lawyers here to advise. In fact...most LEO and DAs will not even give you a second look if you are doing what they all know is WITHIN THE LAW.

Tactical machining makes a single shot AR 80% lower, it has no magazine well. The fire control pockets are the same dimensions, also tactical machining if you look at their jigs the only difference between .308 and the Ar15 are the side plates

Unless you are having your lower engraved with serial number, manufacturer data, etc. per the 'yet-to-become wacky CA law' then other attempts at anticipating what might become required in the future are quite possibly futile.

I think the parts you bought have the potential to be a good 'budget' build. Enjoy building it and shooting it. The process will give you knowledge in the firearm and 'when and if' you are subject to some new requirement, you will have a lot better info on how to decide to proceed in a manner that works for you.
