    Comments on Upper

    Hi everyone,

    I'm going to order my first upper in the next couple days and want you opinion it.

    RRA Mid-length Flattop
    Chrome Lined Chrome Moly Barrel
    Smith Vortex Flash hider
    RRA Quad Rail Mid-length free-float tube -> Is this any good?
    Badger Tatical Latch
    Weaver type Gas Block -> May get the RRA Flip top front sight gas block (not sure about quality though)

    Is it better to mount the front sight on the gas block or rail?
    Also, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hand guard/free float tube that makes the upper look like one piece? Looked at Vltor VIS uppers but they're really expensive.

    Let me know what you think. Thanks!

    Check out the BCM upper, they offer one with DD rail installed and it's mid-length gas system. Is there a reason why you want the Badger latch? I have one and I didn't really like it too much compares to the standard latch.

    Features

    * M4 Feed Ramp Barrel Extension (USGI)
    * M4 Feed Ramp Flat Top Receiver
    * T-Marked Upper Receivers
    * USGI 1/7 Twist Rates
    * USGI 5.56 NATO Chambers
    * Mil-Spec 11595E - Barrel Steel (CMV)
    * Chrome Lined Bore and Chamber
    * Manganese Phosphate Barrel Finish
    * Mil-Spec F-Marked Forged Front Sights
    * USGI Government Profile Barrels
    * HPT (High Pressure Test) Barrels
    * MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspected) Barrels

    Shop BCM 16" mid-length upper receiver groups. Factory assembled, HPT/MPI tested, and engineered for optimal gas dwell time and reliable performance.

      I only thought the about getting the Badger based on other's comments. I really don't know much about ARs since this will be my first.

      Thanks for the link landser1102. That's what I was looking for. But they seem to out of stock...

      I was looking at the Troy MRF-RX as a solution, but I hear they weigh 20 oz...

      How hard to is to completely build an upper?

        It's something you want to take to a gunsmith, unless you have prior experience. Getting the headspace and gas system installed correctly will save your face literally.

          Ok, building my own upper is out then... Girlfriend actually likes my face as is. I guess it's back to waiting for the BCM Upper.

          Anyone with experience with the Troy MRF-RX 13.5"? I just a rail that covers the low profile gas block on a mid-length. Or will or 12" or even a 10" suffice?

            I have an RRA Entry Tactical with the 1:7 chrome lined barrel chambered in 5.56 and that thing is a tack driver!!! I would highly recommend an RRA if you can find one!

            Here is a couple pics of mine with different lowers

              10" won't completely cover the gas block.

                Guess it's made by YHM. If possible, get the light weight one.
                Or get a DD instead.

                The PRI gas buster with military latch is my favorite.

                Personally, I perfer longer forearm with low-profile GB. Such configuration offers longer sight radius and more rails to mount stuff.

                Is it better to mount the front sight on the gas block or rail?
                Somebody said that the sight mounted on GB is more solid than mounted on forearm. Personally, it's no big deal to me.

                Also, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hand guard/free float tube that makes the upper look like one piece? Looked at Vltor VIS uppers but they're really expensive.
                VIS is cheap enough for its quality. How about the LMT MRP series?
                Frankly, try Vltor CASV or ARMS (swan) sleeves, if you want one-piece look.

                  I actually think that building an upper is easier than building a lower assembly.

                  BTW. Say you do order the upper in question. How long are you going to wait for it to get into stock, because last I checked, this whole country is bone dry.

                    Uppers aren't tough to put together, but the tooling costs more than to have someone do it for you.

                    Buy what you can find right now. BCM trumps RRA in quality. I'd rather have a standard FSB than a railed gas block.

                      jgraham15: Thanks for the photos. That's a fine looking rifle you got.

                      Heavy_Grinder: The dealer I've been talking to says 3-5 months. Since I'm not in a rush and doubt their is going to be a ban during that time, I'm content with waiting. But the dealer also said that RRA is revising their pricing on the 15th.

                      RRA Low Profile Gas Block
                      Troy MRF-R 12"<-I'm assuming this will cover the gas block.

                      I would love to get that BCM upper, but not knowing when they will have them in stock makes me hesitant. Especially since I can't pre-order one.

                        Use G&R or Denny's and you can pre-order. They come in stock every few weeks.

                        You'll likely have it before the RRA.

                        Buy both... you'll be able to flip it for what you paid.

                        I wouldn't buy the Troy rail if I could get a DD or a LaRue.
