Changing handguard on M&P 15 Sport II

I just purchased my first AR today, a M&P 15 Sport II. It will be out of jail at the end of the month. I want to switch out the handguard to something with a rail so I can mount a bipod. Any suggestions? Also, how difficult is it to switch out the handguard? Any special tools needed?

I had an M&P 15 Sport and replaced the handguard with a UTG drop in model, see: http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.p...us=&mtrack=1m1

Lots of real estate to mount a bipod and Magpul rail vertical grip.

I also changed mine on my sport just by pulling down on the ring. As long as you're not trying to install a free float rail it's pretty much idiot proof. YouTube has some videos for reference.

I'm no longer a fan of free floated aluminum rails. Way to heavy and expensive for what you're getting. Only make sense if you are gonna literally cover every square once of the rail/hand guard in crap and now that I've gotten tacticool Fever out of my system I care more about practicality than how cool my gun looks to non-shooters lol

Also, those are both MSRP prices, you should be able to find them for less just about anywhere online. I'd avoid buying on Amazon because of how many counterfeits are on there now. Buy from a reputable gun/gun parts dealer like joebob, midway, opticsplanet, brownells...etc

Personally, I like the Magpul SL drop ins. Downside being you need to buy a sling attachment or use a single point (since you have to remove the sling attachment on your FSB).

But they are very slim and look nice.

Like others mentioned...pull the delta ring back and split the handguards out.

Then, insert the two piece replacement rail and you're set. Go with an inexpensive rail. Nothing too expensive needed.

              Good luck.

I actually didn't like how the SL magpul stuff looks but I'll probably buy it anyways for my next rifle since I want to test it out.

One BIG thing to watch out for is the shape of your handguard ring. They come in two basic shapes, triangular and round. The Magpul SL is drop in if your handguard ring is round, if not, then you will have to buy a round one and you will have to remove the front sight to get the new ring on. Removing the front sight take a steady hand and some really hard wacks with a hammer. I you are handy, doable but not for the faint of heart. :-) Unfortunately, most rings that are installed are the triangular one. Take a look at the rings here: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/AR15-...-Parts-s/4.htm

                  Best of luck.

its much slimmer thjan the MOE drop in.

actually, i like the standard "skinny" M4 handguards with heat shields, too.

how often do carbine length guards come with triangle caps?

might be an issue with a middy (they tend to use triangle caps) i suppose

It's easy, just pull down the ring as mentioned. The manual shows you how and I'm sure there's probably a YouTube video on the subject too.

                        .

There is a special tool that can be had fairly cheap if you can't get the old ones off or the new ones on.

                          Sorry, not sorry.

If you want to pull back the D ring(new ones can be stubborn) the field expedient method is to use some 12" channel locks.
Open the jaws to get enough space to get the handles on the ring and pull down. Handles only touching the ring.

Sent using a long string & 2 cans.

I've never owned or even held a AR15 prior to buying my M&P Sport II. I changed the handguard the very minute I brought it home.... just pull back the dring with my hand, pull the bottom half out then top half, and reverse for installing the new one. Having never held one before, took me a few minutes to remove the handguard and install a new one. You won't have any trouble.
