    Help with .308/7.62x51 choice?

Hello all, Looking for help from those owners and experienced more than me.

Having COLTs and a Ruger Mini in .556 is EZ...they all work all of the time... Now that I'm looking into a AR style 308 it gets confusing re the right choice. I'm not a build guy so only Name Brand for me. I like the piston platform for the difference. But hearing some of the negatives re my choices I just don't know...

1st up are the Sig 716 Patrol and Ruger SR762. However half of the info out there is negative. What Ammo-Mags-Clean-Lube-Break in-Jam-o-matics, FTF, FTE, return to manufacturer, repeat and return. Then some with "this thing works great for me," etc., etc. ???

Switching to gas I like the COLT LE6920CA and S&W M&P10. As far as real world experience goes who knows.

Of course all of these choices are available here in CA configuration (what BS) so they are GTG.

What to do, what to do...thanks for any real world advice and input.

    Best, Dave

I drank the piston cool aid after a few years with POS DI rifles in the army. Finally accepted than it wasn't the guns fault and have since learned to love DI guns. For 223/556 DI all day due to parts compatibility/ease of replacement and price. But in 308/762x51 it's really a wash since no two companies follow the same specs. I'm selling my PWS mk114 upper but I'm keeping my PWS mk220 complete rifle

My LR308 is a franken build from a bunch of random parts, random but good quality parts lets put it that way. I have never had 1 issue with it. Threw an adjustable GB and that cut down the recoil significantly. But again i've never shot a piston gun so not too much help. I will say that all you need to do is verify you have the correct .308 parts and it should run fine.

Any members here with experience on Sig 716? Any feedback on that rifle is greatly appreciated. Thinking about one as well.

I've had really good luck with the Sig 716 guns - I own a few, and never had an issue. They're reliable and accurate. The only bit of advice I'd offer up is that the DMR guns tend to have a much better build quality than the patrol guns. The downside to them is that they're heavy... The upside is that all kinds of extras are included in the package (match-grade heavy barrel, bipod, MIAD grips, Geiselle two-stage trigger, Magpul PRS stock, nice cleaning kit, nice solid rifle case). The DMRs are a few hundred bucks more than the Patrol guns, but you get way more than a few hundred bucks in accessories.

They're some of my favorite guns to shoot - but I wouldn't want to be carrying one on a ten mile hike.

PTR is superior to the AR platform.

I have a 716 patrol fde for sale here on the marketplace. Great gun. No problems at all with function. Gun will eat anything I put in it. Only downside is it is a little on the heavy side but other than that I have been very happy with it. Unfortunately I caught the scar itch....

If I were looking at new .308 ARs, I'd give a hard look at the DPMS G II or Mega Arms SF-MaTen (not yet available). Both are smaller frame .308 AR designs. Saves some weight.

Other than that, I have a JP built LR308 upper that is fantastic. JP's are pricey but absolutely amazing.

                        I bought a S&W M&P-10.
Considered the SIG or building one from parts, but with the S&W,
                        Lifetime warranty.

The only things I changed, low profile gas block, forearm rail, and Geiselle trigger.

If your looking at an AR style platform I would highly recommend a LMT MWS. I owned one personally it was a beautifully made weapon, if you look at reviews you really wont find anything negative aside from price. I deeply regret selling that rifle.

Fals are ****ing awesome btw, I had SA58 21 inch full railed fal from DSA, that rifle would eat every round I could feed it, steel or brass. Pretty goddamn rough trigger though, accurate but by no means a dedicated tack driver.

Id carry that one into the apocalypse no issues.

If you want a piston gun, the Sig 716 is a fine shooter. It has been run hard and wet by lots of people now. Plus, now that the 2nd Gen guns are shipping, the weight is down and issues from 1st gen have been addressed. If budget allows however ,the LWRC REPR is your finest option in the marketplace for a piston 308.

If DI is your flavor, get a Wilson Combat and enjoy smoking your targets out to 1000 yards with relative ease.

I own the WC and the LWRC and am confident that you will be well served by either. Don't own the Sig but have had some time on its trigger and have researched the Gen 2 guns.

                            Good luck.

SCAR 17, and its probably cheaper than a LMT MWS. The SCAR 17 an excellent rifle. So good I bought a second one.

SCAR 17 only weighs 7.9 pound dry. It is very accurate, and runs super clean.
