A buddy of mine who lives in WI somehow ended up buying an AR15 lower with what I'm assuming is a bullet button mag release. He's a total newb and I'm not familiar with that system. Can that mag release simply be removed and replaced with a normal mag button? Any special tools needed?

Yes, but sometimes they are loctited on there. I have known a few people who had to drill out the magazine catch to remove the bullet button. Depends on who assembled the lower. Heat also works. Be careful with either method not to damage the lower.

As for tools, it depends on the bullet button but most need a tool like the bullet button wonder wrench - it's like a standard front sight adjutment tool, but with only 2 protrusions rather than 4 or 5. Some just need a small screwdriver or an allen key.

In addition to a standard magazine button you probably need a standard spring. The bullet buttons usually use a shorter spring. The magazine catch itself is typically the same old standard one.

Yup. He just needs to remove it and replace it with a regular mag release button and spring. Don't leave the spring thats in there.

As for special tools - not needed. A Bullet button "wonder wrench" ($5 on Amazon) will save him about 15 seconds, but it can be done with a mini screwdriver or something similar. You just have to unscrew the tiny castle-nut inside the bullet button, then the whole thing falls apart.

There was a time where bullet buttons were designed to be hammered in, but they have since gone back to the drop in design, so it could be a pain to remove. but usually its as simple as undo the screw and install normal mag release button and spring
