This one in particular does not say whether it is CA compliant or not.

I've looked at both the Ruger and S&W offerings. While the S&W is pretty much a "MilSpec" carbine the Ruger has a "proprietary" front sight/gas block that I did not care for.

      Cheers,
      W-W

And ruger's state compliant model (except CA) also has non collapsible stock.

Its (Ruger) item 8502 - http://ruger.com/products/ar556/specSheets/8502.html Indeed it doesn't have a collapsible stock (I wonder why?).

It's not CA compliant model. It's state compliant model which incorp. restrictions from several states(thus, -stock ) , but CA is not listed as one of the states. So, no bullet button.

            Tell that to Riflegear - 4 in stock at $679.00 - http://www.riflegear.com/p-3529-ruge...ifle-8500.aspx

See, what they list is 8500. So it's custom modified (30 -> 10 rounds and bullet button) NON state compliant model.

So, it generally is difficult to find a combination of ruger + CA, because it is not off the shelf standard combo nimber XXXXX. And it might be considered a little grayish by some.

Smith and Wesson offers CA compliant model off the web site as standard product.

If you're planning on keeping it bone stock it's great but two odd things. 1st the A2 sight/gas block is pinned on the top instead of the bottom. You wouldn't think it would be a problem but when a low profile gas block was installed the gas leaked out the grooves in the barrel from the pins because they're too close to the gas port.
2nd, for some reason they use some kind of thread sealant on the barrel nut. The shop that was removing it for my friend used heat and still ended up warping the upper receiver slightly before the barrel net came loose. The shop owner ended up talking ruger into sending him a new upper.

                  Food for thought.
You friend would have been better off shaving the gas block instead of replacing it. There are a lot of youtube vids on how to do it. Much better than a low profile GB. I've done 4 or 5 because pinned is more secure than set screws.

Also, surprised a gun smith couldn't remove a barrel nut without ruining the upper, something fishy there.
sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

Colt Expanse is the way to go in this price range. All Colt goodness.

MSRP $699 I'm sure the street price will be less.

Yes, but due to all current/past/future attention to ARs from lawmakers I'd preffer the paperwork to reflect/support "California compliant" statement. 'Cause if you have papers saying 8500 - then it's not.... If the seller somehow provides docs regarding modifications then it's good.

You're overthinking. You're buying it new from a California FFL (as your invoice will dictate). No FFL will jeopardize their license over a sale for a $100 net profit.

With that thinking, nobody should ppt an off roster firearm.

Buy it. Shoot it. Enjoy it.

My thoughts exactly. I haven't made my purchase yet, but I found a sale on-line (forgive me for not remembering the price ), but after looking up an ffl dealer, the cost was more than at the gun store.

This isn't always the case. Depends on the gun, where you live and what the ffl fee is. In So Cal it looks as if most firearms can be purchased at a reasonable cost, so unless they just don't have it in stock it probably doesn't make sense to order. In my area there's generally some savings over lgs even with the ffl fee.
