    Ak Thread Adapter Concern

I was at a local shop a few weeks back looking for a 5.56 muzzle break. I bought a Surefire comp that was on sale for 50. Well guess who was being a dum dum and didnt bother to look at the fine print [308]. And guess who doesn't have a return policy? Then I got a brilliant 💡. I decided to replace my factory Chevron muzzle break on my AK with the Surefire.

I ordered a 5/8x24 to 14x1 LH adapter for about 20 bucks and when it arrived, I realized how difficult it is to tighten an adapter that has conflicting thread hands. I was able to get it on somewhat securely with some loctite, but the adapter itself is still not torqued all the way down. However, the adapter has 4 notches at the bottom that I assume are there on purpose to mate with the spring loaded post that are on a lot of AK front posts. So the comp is tight on the adapter, but I cannot tighten the adapter any further without once again loosening the comp from the adapter. After i go as far as I can with the adapter. The spring loaded detent on the front sight post lands in the middle of two notches. Sticky situation right? So i was forced to back off the adapter about a quarter turn so that the sight post plunger catches one of the notches.

So my question is should I be GTG with this setup? I would hate to get keyholing or even worse tiny metal shards flying off the Comp at very high speeds in all directions. And a waste of 60 bucks. Should i cut my losses and sell the comp and adapter and start over with a true AK muzzle comp?

    I appreciate the wisdom.

So as it stands now, I have slight wiggle on the adaptor. The notches in the adapter are slightly larger than the spring loaded plunger on my front sight post.

AK brakes are loose too. As long as you don't have baffle strikes it's fine.

Ak's are designed that way. You installed it correctly by backing it down until the plunger caught.

Slightly loose muzzle devices on AK's are normal.

Ok right on dudes I thought I would be but wanted some consolation. What is a baffle strike? I assume striking the compensator? The factory brake was a little loose as well but the new adapter notches are a little bit wider adding slightly more play. Also the Surefire is about 1/2 an inch longer than the factory brake, and the adapter itself adds another third of an inch. I know one of the concerns of suppressors is that the added length adds probability of striking the tip of the suppressor, and most folks use peel washers instead of crush washers since the flatness makes it more true to the bore. Its nowhere near suppressor length and I am using a crush washer hoping that it will be straight enough.

Why don't you cut a small notch on the thread adapter so it fits perfect?

I used a small thin dermel cutoff wheel to make the notch. Take it slow to get it just right.

                      *UPDATE*

Range Report- Just got home a few hours ago after trying out the new brake. It worked wonderful. No baffle strikes or keyholing. And the adapter didnt walk out of the front sight post plunger. This surefire break is awesome. Loud as all hell, but I did notice an increase in accuracy. I also thought it felt like there was less felt recoil on my chest, but a bit more muzzle rise after the shot passed the break. People hate on Century but my c39v2 has been accurate as hell straight from the box. I guess im one of the lucky ones. Only thing I do not like is how fast the bolt and carrier are wearing at the edges. On the look out for original polish milled replacements.

Glad it worked out for you. I had a similar issue with mine and it also worked out fine with some loctite.

AK rifles are a lot more accurate than people think.

I am better with an AK then I am with my AR. I was shocked to discover that.
