    Question About 14.5" Uppers

Can you be in possession of an AR type 14.5" upper in CA as long as it is not assembled with the lower??? I travel quite a bit to AZ and FL and am considering purchasing a 14.5" stand-alone upper to use when I am out of state. So would it be legal to have this type of upper as long as I swap it out with my 16" barrel upon my return to CA????

14.5" with a pinned muzzle brake or no? Federally it has to be 16".

Unless you own an AR pistol lower, I would say owning a 14.5" upper without a pinned muzzle device is a no-go even if it's not assembled on your rifle lower.

14.5" upper are good to go in CA, as long as with a flash hider or muzzle brake overall length reaches 16.1"

In my opinion you should not have a loose (unattached) pistol upper with, around, or near any long gun lowers.

Even when building I will not purchase or complete my upper till the lower is ready to roll.

I personally would not keep one around unless it was married to a pistol lower.

I also fail to see the purpose of a 14.5 pistol lol. It would be like asking glock to produce a 14" barrel for the 17. Pistol is a pistol, go small! 7.5, 10 max for special purposes.

More specifically the brake or hider must be pinned or permanently attached. If not then you are still in possession of a 14.5 barrel

It must be pinned to achieve 16". Not even sure the birdcage is long enough. Don't think it is. So unless you have a pistol lower it would be an SBR in any state.

Im selling a brand new Surefire FH556-212A Flash hider if you're interested. $90 shipped. It'll bring your upper to the 16" minimum when installed and pinned/welded.

The 16" barrel length requirement is federal law. Being in CA or AZ has nothing to do with it.

try out the BCM A2X. its an extended birdcage flashhider

"When mounted per BATF specifications for a permanent installation it will bring your 14.5” M4 barrel to a non-NFA length of over 16.1”.

The A2X is an extended A2 flash hider found on the M16 and M4 series of rifles. Pre-drilled and comes with a dowel pin and crush washer for install.

Just so you know, even out of state you would need an sbr lower to attach the upper.
