CMP delivers!

Took 11 days from when I got the email saying they received my order to get my 1st M1. Ordered 2 rifles, a greek return and a USGI along with a case of ammo.

Fedex showed up this moring and I greeted the lady with the brown box in my boxers. So we both got a surprise.

Bought a field grade greek rifle, SA 5.4million looks like the original barrel as its also SA and from the same year 1954-55

SA milled trigger housing and bolt.

Dont know too much about garands so thats the extent of my knowledge, the gas cylinder is loose with some side to side and forward to back play, need to figure out how to tighten that up.

Finish is OK, nothing too worn except for the cylinder lock and some rust on the oprod. Park is worn mostly on the edges, wood is in 1 piece but has alot of dings and a few scratches with a large pitted area.

Bore is dark but is really dirty.

Overall quite happy and the rifle feel solid except for the gas cylinder.

Now I just need a bayonet to go with it.

Good going, are they both field grades? Once you get them both cleaned up, try interchanging the gas cylinders and see if they are a better fit. May have to peen the bbl spleens to tighten up the fit in necessary.

I only have the greek return right now, as theres no back order for it.

I know peening the splines will help side to side but how about the front to back, it moves about 1/16 of an inch up or down the barrel.

Even when you tighten up the gas cylinder plug? There shouldn't be any play in the gas cylinder front to back assuming you screw the gas cylinder lock down and then tighten the gas cylinder plug appropriately.

Yes, the whole assembly (gas cylinder, plug, gas lock) all move as one, it seems to be excess backlash or clearance on the threads for the gas lock. I may try some teflon tape tighten that up.

I really need to get stuff done right now but my mind keeps wandering to that rifle sitting at home.

Peening the splines

Peening the splines will tighten all gas cylinder movement. My 1943 Winchester was very loose. Peening the splines cured all.

Anyways, back on topic. FedEx has my M1. It was shipped yesterday and the hang tag was on my door when I went home for lunch.
I'll be picking it up either tomorrow or Monday.
It's my first, a Field Grade Springfield Armory.
I wanted an all USGI and this was all that they are currently selling.
Took just about 60 days.
Serial # is a 5.29 million range from the CMP order page.
Gotta go find out when that was made, etc.
I'll probably have pictues next week.

Cool deal. A friend of mine was a pirate (actually about 10 different ones) on a History Channel show. Real Pirates of the Caribbean or Something like that.

Again, back to topic.
I looked on Jousters and they showed SA 5.29 fitting in 1954-5.
Where can I find info if all the parts are correct or original?
Or is that all in one of those must have books I'll probably be buying soon.

I used Scott Duff (post war) book. The records for the post war Garands were not good. Most records were found using original rifles (I think)...

I dont know if all parts can be dated, my barrel is dated 54 which is the same year as the receiver, also the trigger group and bolt are also SA but have no date marking that I can discern.

The discovery channel thing was AWESOME, I had a chance to play with real BAR's, 1919's. PPSH-14, and other machine guns. What made me cry was an all correct 1942 SA garand with lockbar rear sight that was plugged to fire blanks.

Took the rifles out the SGVGC, at first I was pissed and wasnt even getting it on the paper at 50yds.

Then after a few more shots I was putting them in a 4-5 in group at 50yds with some nice 1in groups. My m1a was putting 1in groups at 100yds using irons.

So you can get it shipped directly from CMP to your front door, no DROS through FFL or any of that? No C&R license needed? How is that they could do this with all the crazy gun laws going on?
