even a pistol with a brake is noticeably louder, a 1911 with brake will slap your ears from 50 ft away
Reason has seldom failed us because it has seldom been tried

I said "massive concussion" because i knew it would get a response.
The difference between my kel-tec, saiga, and sks with no brake vs. my AR w/ a brake is night and day. My old Colt had the standard flash suppressor and didn't have a shockwave anything like that.
Welcome to the world of black rifles? I've owned AR-15s for over ten years..i mean i'm not and old salt but i'm not a newb by any means.

        Of course.
        Of course not.
Sounds like you are new to muzzle brakes though.

I don't like muzzle brakes because they're impolite.

I do want to note that everyone in this string spelled "brake" correctly. Great job!

It was twenty years ago a guy pulled out the first Barrett 50 we ever saw. Of course we lined up in either side of him to see it shoot (he shot it by sitting behind it with the gun between his legs like a spade mounted MG)

When he touched off that first round we LEAPED back at the muzzle blast which was coming right towards us!

Over the years as a gun journalist I have had to take pictures sometimes dangerously close to the muzzle of a firing gun. Always with some I trusted and always with safety gear -- but that first Barrett .50 shot I will never forget.

I'm suprised that I don't see more people in here talking about the Levang Compensator, that one is supposed to deaden recoil while sending the sound energy downrange.

I have the Levang on one of my 223 uppers, much less blast than some of my others. I have a Cooley Brake on my JP upper, works great, and a AK74
brake on my Mini 14. For blasting your neighbor the JP Tank Brake is the worst.

I love the noise at the range......

However.....I did fire my AR for a while with NO ear-protection......and yes.....my ears were ringing for a while after.

                  I just had to know.

On this same trip we took a hike to this desert pond up this narrow canyon and i brought the AR..my dad says..i bet you can't hit that hole in the side of that mountain. I completely forgot that i had taken out the earplugs for the walk so i take my AR of my shoulder, kneel, aim and fire with a vertical wall of the canyon no more than 3 feet to the left of me...ouch that was stupid...my ears were ringing for a bit after that. BIG DUMMY!

How does this compare to a crowned barrel?
Vs a compensator or a Brake?
I am curious to know the response to the shooter as well as the people in the back of the shooter at the range.

                        TIA..

Blast from my Ferret 50 with a Serbu Shark Brake. You can see the triangular blast pattern. Shooting it, or standing behind it, not so bad. Standing or shooting next to it....you don't want to.

I can tell you have never stood next to a 50 BMG...

                            Get over it.
Don't stand right next to someone shooting a gun with a brake.
Indeed, a .50 BMG is a lot more fun to stand next to while being shot.
