The shell deflector is a std built-in feature of modern AR upper receivers. Many early M16s did not have them, but (IIRC) the A1 had them. The A2 has them as well. The Colt 9mm AR has a special one attached to a slab-sided receiver. There may be some specialty upper receivers that do not have them (DPMS Lo-Pro??) but by and large most AR uppers have a built-in shell deflector. You can't buy it; it's just "there".

It is the angled wedge-shaped projection on the right hand side of the upper rcvr (when viewed from shooter's orientation) behind the ejection port/door. The ejected cases bounce off it, and if your AR is running right they generally fly out at "4:30 pm" relative to shooter's position.

[And for those worried about brass marks, they can be wiped off reasonably well but the real answer is "get a life". ARs are for shooting. If you want a show gun, go buy an antique and hang it off the wall.]

The Canadian Armed Forces adopted a variation of the M16A2 that was produced by Diemaco under a license from Colt. While the Canadian C7 rifle has a integral brass deflector behind the ejection port, the rifle has an A1 carry handle with A1 rear sight assembly, a square A2 front sight and an M16A2 profile barrel.

Bushmaster began selling the Diemaco C7 uppers as M16A1 uppers in the 90's.
I have an A1 upper in my closet with a deflector on it, wanna see a pic?

Actually, there is black plastic snap-on brass deflector designed for the original AR-15's and M-16s.

I haven't seen one in a long time, but they show up every once in a while.

Read The Black Rifle. Look at the pictures.

Back in 1980 when I bought my first AR15, I built my first aftermarket upper on an A1 upper and there was no deflector. The army issued a plastic deflector that snapped into the handguard. The A2 was still under development and one of the big features was the brass deflector.
          Then what do I have??

Its an A1 upper, with a windage knob like an A2, no elevation adjustment, triangle handguards and a deflector...

          I wonder what it is.

and they do manufacture an additional deflector for CQB that guides cases straight down so your teammates don't get a hot brass shower.......

Where would ejected cases go without the deflector? Pretty much straight back? Well, maybe not straight back, not possible, but like 5 o'clock or something?
