Last year I bought a Rem 700 PSS (or PPS?) in 7 Rem Mag with the HS stock and 26" bbl. Got it at River City for $800.00 and I'd bet they still have a few left. I'm very happy with the rifle, set the trigger about as light as possible (old style, not the X) and used Leupold steel PRW rings. I figured I'd done well when I sent some of my old reloads downrange and got under 1" when all I expected was patterning more than grouping.

I was looking at the 700Ps, 5R, etc... for my next bolt setup. I decided to go with a 700sps varmint. Its cheap and the money I saved plus a little more upgrade to the AICS. I don't think there is much difference between the 700P and SPS varmint besides the stock.

I like them and just bought my second. For the money, you can't beat the accuracy of the Police and std varment rifles. Both rifles I have had will print 4-shot groups under 3/4-inch with reloads. Yea, if you spend another $2K you can get a rifle that groups 1/2-1/4" at 100 yds, but whats the point? The police rifles tend to be a little rougher in finish with more blemishes than the varment version - but again it is a police sniper rifle made for duty rather than gun case admiration. If you can find them I recommend, but they tend to be difficult to find on the civilian market. The varment and sendero are made the same except for steel and stock finish.
