    Scope Question (.270 Bolt)

Just wondering what power scope you folks use / recommend for a .270? If rifle matters, it will more than likely be a Tikka T3 Lite. Thanks for the info.

I checked out a couple reviews. It seems that a 3 9X40 should be adequate. Does this sound right? I don't want to be under powered.

Would help to know how you intend to use the rifle.

3-9x is pretty standard - I usually like 4-12s, but I also learned to use a scope with both eyes open, and hunting Jackrabbits, so 4 minimum works okay - there have been a few times in really thick areas I wished I had the 3, but few and far between.

On the other end, 9x is usually fine for the distances you would be hunting deer at. And you will probably wind up spending most of teh time in 5-7x range when hunting, maybe putting it to 9 occasionally. My 4-12 winds up at 12 usually only when doing a little sittin and looking across large open areas (remember if you are hand holding or using an impromptu rest, your motion/jitter is going to be amplified 9 times!).

Would definitely suggest starting with the 3-9 if you haven't used scopes much before, try it for a year or so (HUNTING, not just range) and then see if you want more, or even less magnification. I know a lot of people that like their 2-7x as well... like most things - gotta figure out what works best for you.

and now you can start the whole 1" or 30mm tube and 40, 42, 46, 50, 60 mm objective deliberation...

2-7X or 3-9X, both would give you lots of flexibility and allow two eye open shooting as well as the power to stretch the .270's legs a bit when given the chance.

I would choose a small dia bell objective though in order to keep the scope low to the bore to allow for a flatter short range trajectory. Not alot of knob turning in a hunting rifle...

3-9 is usually plenty... I've used scopes with greater magnification and they're usually darker, takes longer to acquire the target and the image looks jittery at the higher x's...

Buy something decent .270 packs plenty of recoil.
