If you made one out of chocolate would it technically be a weapon that needs to be registered? I like the idea.

I had some personalized dog tags made up from an on-line site. Haven't quite figured out how they will be installed, but I'm thinking a Dremel and some 2-part epoxy will be involved.

Those don't meet the legal requirement, unfortunately, as that looks like a fraction of an ounce, and the law requires 3.7oz. of stainless steel.

          (B) If the firearm is manufactured or assembled from polymer plastic, 3.7 ounces of material type 17-4 PH stainless steel shall be embedded within the plastic upon fabrication or construction with the unique serial number engraved or otherwise permanently affixed in a manner that meets or exceeds the requirements imposed on licensed importers and licensed manufacturers of firearms pursuant to subsection (i) of Section 923 of Title 18 of the United States Code and regulations issued pursuant thereto.

The tags weigh 0.2oz. The kits come with a 2.00oz Support Brace, so that gives us 2.2oz. The rest of the weight can be made up by imbedding stainless steel finishing nails or small bolts/washers.

The law doesn't say it has to all be one piece.

The part that could be (will be) a problem is, "17-4 PH stainless steel." I'm not a metallurgist, so I don't know what that is.

Doesn't the law say a firearm in ready to use condition, If so won't a lower parts kit suffice for enough metal won't it

I don't have time to look up all of the references, but it looks like the section that says you need 3.5 oz of stainless steel (sec. 29180) does not apply:

29181. Section 29180 does not apply to or affect any of the following:
                (a) A firearm that has a serial number assigned to it pursuant to either Section 23910 or pursuant to Chapter 44 (commencing with Section 921) of Part 1 of Title 18 of the United States Code and the regulations issued pursuant thereto.
23910 is the updated section that talks about needing serial numbers.

I tried to follow what is referencing what, but I just get lost in the mess.
