AR-10 Buffer Issues/Questions

So it is a 2.5" buffer but when i shake it, there is no internal movement as you suggest, and the smith pointed this out to me as well.

Yes 2.5 inches is the same length as the dpms carbine buffer, I have this same one and you can feel the weight inside shift around

Yeah. No shifting in mine. I think it's possible AN issue, but I'm leaning towards the gas system right now... I'll replace the spring and buffer but I want to know if I need to get a new BCG too... If so, It's all going to have to wait.

I don't really think it's the buffer either. If you need to replace the bcg I used one of these on an upper I assembled last week they are on back order now $129 for 308 bcg is hard to beat they have a nickel boron for $10 more

Make sure your buffer is 2.5 inches long. I ordered a cheap 308 buffer on EBay and they sent me the ugliest AR15 carbine buffer I have ever seen. I sent that back and ordered the DPMS brand 308 carbine buffer and spring from Midway USA.
I use the same DPMS buffer setup in two 308 builds and both have been pretty much trouble free from the start.

So the things to investigate is the BCG itself and the hole on the barrel to ensure it is the proper diameter, correct?

Look at the inside of the rear receiver where the buffer tube screws in and see if there is any damage from the carrier hitting the threads, happened to me using an AR-15 buffer tube with the DPMS AR-10 carbine buffer and spring. Replaced them with the A5 system and now just waiting on an adjustable gas block as the rifle is insanely over gassed.

I did the same but, but went with rifle buffer and spring to go with my A2 style stock. I ordered a rifle spring and buffer of Ebay. The spring they went me, while it was the correct length, had too many coils. Something like 37, instead of the normal 29 or so. Too many coils so that when the spring compressed, it wasn't short enough to allow the bolt to travel fully to the rear.
I ordered a spring from Armalite, and I had no further problems. Though, I ended up going back to the collapsable stock and original buffer and spring.

Let me find the buffer tube and spring I used - it was cheap. Gas block is at 50%. Ran two boxes without an issue.

Can't find it. It was a dpms 308 buffer with ar 308 spring (can't remember the name of it). I did find this (see link).

This is for a rifle length stock, not carbine length.

Here is a dpms lr 308 buffer spring (carbine length) for $10. Carbine length 308 buffer at the bottom of the page for $30.

Lube the bcg and charging handle. Manually cycle and go with an adjustable gas block.

The orange spring on the link provided looks correct. I have used a couple of smaller springs and detents from Guntec, I'm not sure the buffer is the problem yet. Intimid8tor is right the problem is not described well enough yet there could be another problem like bcg gas key leaking that can also cause cycling issues. See if there is another cal gunner in your area that you may be able to meet at a range who has a working lower you can test with before buying parts that may not address the problem. I changed my 308 from carbine to a fixed stock, I have the dpms carbine spring and buffer still if you are interested in them

Your do realize all of the guntec usa gun parts are made in China a proscribed country by executive order from three American president. The owner old man Charlie knows **** about machining when my buddy visit one of their friends machine shop with 2 axis cnc. He called him out on it and apparently old man Charlie and his son was stumped by elementary level of machining. I wouldn't trust their ****

That buffer is exactly your problem. It is made in China and the weights are not tungsten and the blocks of the weights are not sectioned correctly. Buy a DPMS rifle length buffer. I bet you my left nut that the weights in that buffer is one piece.

I dont think its the buffer. I once took out a carbine buffer, melted some lead and replaced the steel inside. Theres no movement in the buffer but it sure stopped ripping the cases out after the modification. So im pretty sure its the gas system. Either gas port too small or gas block not aligned. Op, have you checked gas rings and the stakes on the hex nut??
