Sure, just push it back level from where you pushed it up from.*

Depending on the number of tires, it could be a hassle to dispose of them legally.

    * ETA - or just leave it and it becomes a landscaping feature

Yep, and since tires are considered sort of a hazmat item, you have to pay a bit to discard them. Whereas, a berm is just a dirt pile. Dirt is easy to get rid of or make disapear.

If you do anything that decreases the firearms output dB you have created a silencer per federal law. The ATF will not be happy since you have not paid your tax and CA DOJ won't be happy either. The only way to legally silence a firearm is to move to a free state, pay the $200 for a tax stamp and purchase one.

Are your neighbors to the side or behind where you are shooting, or somewhere semi down range?

If the they are located behind your "firing line, then you need to install a bloop tube to the barrel and use subsonic ammo. Most .22 match ammo is subsonic. It does not suppress the sound, but any unburned powder burns in the tube, plus the tube acts as a directional sound device. It's extremely quiet if you are behind the muzzle. Down range of the muzzle the noise level is still the same.

How about planting a screen of juniper trees on each side of your range? Plant two rows on each side with the second row staggered from the first. In addition to being an evergreen, they have a slender christmas tree shape and dense foilage when young. In addition to redirecting the sound, you would also gain the benefit of a wind screen. Maybe in conjuction with a berm? Just a thought.

Interesting stuff. As you're standing on the firing line looking at your targets, in what directions are these neighbors? I don't even think you would need a full berm, you could just put up some cinderblock walls on both sides of you. This would direct the sound up and down range. It would take a little of the edge off the sound for the neighbs.

+1 on getting to know those neighbors though. That would be my first priority.

                So from I have read:
-Rent a tractor, dig out your shooting range like a ditch, and add the dirt to both sides to create berms (also creates a safer shooting ally.
-Hang some tires from a make shift set of monkey bars for at least one lane of your newly dug shooting range.
-Plant trees around your shooting range. It will make it look nicer and may help with sound deadening.
-Invite your neighbors over for some cookies, milk, and shooting.
-Use sub-sonic ammo in conjunction with a legally attachable sound re-directing device.
-Sound suppressors are illegal in CA
-One guy claims that sound can be significantly suppressed with a silencer, to the point that you can shoot without hearing protection; and someone argued against that by saying that it would still cause hearing damage. It was determined that many everyday sounds cause hearing damage.

Does a suppressed shot really cause ear damage?

Full auto Mac10 in 45 with silencer is fun to shoot, without ear protection. But, if any of you think about making a silencer without a license or proper paperwork, DON'T!

Sound deadening requires mass....that's why concrete block walls are constructed along freeways....earth berms work, too...

i dont know about this one, but a lot of "dummy" suppressor are exactly like real one except there are no holes to bleed the gas

unfortunately there are way too many sources to get instructions on where to drill

the dummies are tac welded, so people break the welds, drill, and re-weld

                            totally illegal and not advised

sub-sonic rounds are the answer to lowering sound legally in this state

know of states where you can legally buy suppressor
