What are some of the options available that accept AR mags but have no banned features? I was thinking about this and only came up with the Kel Tec SU-16 which looks really cheap. Anyone have experience with them? I don't want to convert an AR style gun. I wish Ruger had the sense to make an AR mag compatible Mini 14, that would seal the deal.

Ares scr.
Or make your own with thorsden custom. It replaces pistol grip.
Or monster man type.
Just remember no flash hider, no pistol grip. No fwd pistol grip. No telescoping butt stock. No thumbhole. And no bullet button.

Ares SCR is pretty much your only choice if you don't want to convert an existing non-featureless gun. Benelli made a featureless rifle that uses AR mags but it's not in production anymore. So far people seem to like it. Only complaints are that the bolt catch is extra and the trigger is only good.
Now that I think about it, another option might be a Saiga in .223 with a AR magwell conversion. I am unfamiliar with those though.Comment

OP, why are you struck on the idea that you have to have AR magazines????
If it is solely because they are cheap, then you are approaching the featureless rifle from the wrong angle. If it is because you already have a bunch of AR mags, get over it and move on.
Instead of getting an obscure rifle that probably costs a fair amount of money, but uses cheap magazines, just get a common rifle like a Mini 14, and buy a few magazines for that. Yes it is true that Mini 14 mags are a bit more expensive, but really, how many do you need? The same holds true for other magazine fed semi auto rifles like the .223 Saiga etc..
I would bet money that four or five mags would last you for your lifetime unless you plan on running over them with a truck. I have been shooting for over 45 years and have yet to have a magazine wear out. There is this silly notion that has been propagated over the internet that you MUST have dozens of magazines for every gun you own.
My personal experience in that you will tend to use the same two or three magazines over and over and the rest of your hoard will languish in your closet. I have been using the same few magazines in my AR's since 1989, and have yet to have a problem with any of them. And that was while practicing and shooting in service rifle matches for many years.
Now, as a disclaimer, I am not an operator, operating operationally while doing tactical drills in BLMistan. So if your psyche is such that it absolutely needs to have a weapon with several dozen magazines that hold thirty rounds (because you already have them), you may indeed need to find some kind rifle that can use them. Me, I would rather have a rifle that I can easily get parts and accessories for.MLC member.

Make your own. Featureless. Fixed Ace Stock, any of the many options to hold on to the rifle......no bullet button is a good thing.
I also have a Kel-Tec SU-16 and while it's mostly plastic, it runs very good. It's folded up in my trunk in a bag with several 20 Round (preban) magazines.
It's piston powered and it even runs steel case ammo, although I have Brass ammo for it. It's a Trunk Gun.
Although not fancy, a simple AR that is featureless and somewhat Spartan is the best option. Fixed Ace stock, a fake can up front, normal mag release, 20 round AR mags, flip up sights. A boom stick.
May the Bridges I burn light the way.

@Highpower The reason I'm set on the AR type is I have a lot of mags. I understand your point and if I had to use blocked mags I would probably stick to a bullet button gun.
@Oceanbob Good to hear about the reliability of the SU 16. I'm still considering it. I read some where that some SU 16 models are not to be used with 5.56, only .223. Have you been able to run yours with 5.56? Is yours the SU 16B model?Last edited by HKRick; 11-01-2016, 10:11 PM.Comment

I have the ares scr
works fine
mag release is further away then normal, so I fixed that by using extended mag release and the troy mag release on the left side
they sell as an extra a bolt hold open $40 approx
and sights $170 approx
You can see on mine I put a quad rail and some cz pistol sights for cheap way to get something on it
I bought the complete rifle so if your using your own upper they do sell just the lower, stock and bolt carrier

Huge fan of the ares scr too. Now that they ship with nice triggers, it is a great gunComment

AR rifles are a dime a dozen. I wouldn't think twice about converting one to featureless.
In fact I have, to all of my AR's.
Except my AR pistol.
Because you can't.Comment
