How much are active-duty serviceman allowed to customize their rifle/carbine?

The things I would want to change would mainly be inside the upper. Did anyone have reliability issues with the carbine gas system? Bolts cracking? Weak buffer springs?

You just mentioned POG units..what about regular Infantry units? When I was with the 25th (1/14th Infantry Light) there was no optimization allowed. Of course this was mid 80s to early 90s and to be frank, there was not much available. The only scopes we were issued was AN PVS 3 or 4. I know there are newer versions, but that was the only thing we were issued or your AN PVS 7s.

The regular infantry units that I support , I have not seen anything crazy other than the USGI gear, slings are about the only thing, but sights and other gear is all issue.
