    Ruger Factory Mini-14 Mag Issue

I took my 185-series Mini-14 out today and burned through some ammo. When I tried to use my brand-spankin' new Ruger factory 10-round mags, though, they wouldn't stay locked in place in the well. The factory 5-rounders worked fine.

    Anyone else have this issue?

Return the mags to where they were purchased. I know this is California but really.
California's politicians and unionized government employees are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels look like a Girl Scout Troop in comparison.

Works fine in my 186 Mini 14. Something amiss with the magazine perhaps? Did you put the 5 and 10 rounders side by side to compare the front and rear lock points?

The factory Ruger mags are usually the standard for reliability. If you can find the latest generation of Tapco Mini-14 mags, they are very reliable and much cheaper than factory mags.

Does it lock up when it is empty? If not open the bolt and look to see if the front pin goes into the hole. If it does see if the back clicks in place. If it doesn't click into place the rear tab is too low. If everything works with the mag empty, fill the mag and see if it seats with the bolt open. If it does then see if the mag will seat with the mag filled with 8 or nine cartridges with the bolt closed. I had an after market mags that was too short and they wouldn't let the shells compress down far enough to seat properly. I never heard of factory mags being too short though. If all else fails contact Ruger and they will replace it for free and they usually pay for shipping both ways as well.

Make sure they are locked in tight. You have to pivot the mags into the lock position, it isn't always easy. If you just push them in, they don't click in.

I was loading all mags (5 and 10 round) full to capacity, with the bolt locked open. The 5-rounders worked perfectly.

When I compare the 5s and 10s side by side, you can see that the tab on the 10-rounders is a little short, and has a bevel on the bottom that's not present on the 5-rounder. The retailer is going to take them back, so I'm going to get a refund and try some others.

Since Rugers are supposed to be the reliable ones, and weren't, I'm going to try Pro-Mags next. They seem to have about the same number of happy customers as Ruger, so I don't see the down side.

I have yet to see anything manufactured by Pro-Mag work reliably in any firearm, Mini-14's especially. I have had great results with Ruger factory ten round examples, even in my ancient, rare Mini chambered in .222 (yes, .222 Remington). Try another one. Like another member said, make sure to rock them into place.

Because of the stack up of dimensions, they might work better loaded with 9 rounds. Factory Ruger mags are the best.
