I've been considering punching out and replacing the trunnion on an AK pistol to replace it with something capable of accepting a AR-style pistol receiver extension (incapable of mount a stock). Are there any special legal considerations regarding an AR-style receiver extension on an AK pistol? I would presume not considering that's what Sig-style arm braces do and those are available for the AK platform, but I figured it was worth running it by the forums just in case..

Legal considerations for an AR-style tube on an AK pistol?

It could be argued that it falls under the same guidelines as the sig brace.
I would certainly use a pistol buffer tube though and not a carbine or rifle buffer tube as that would help the argument that you are making a SBR (constructive possession).
That wouldn't be the case with a pistol buffer tube.
That said, this would ultimately fall under the interpretation of the judge you would be standing before, were you to be charged.sigpic

Agreed on both counts, and I'd vastly prefer the Thordson check rest.It could be argued that it falls under the same guidelines as the sig brace.

Is the tube just generally okay even if it's not vital to the functioning of the firearm as it would be on a typical AR pistol? Again, the Sig brace does almost the same thing, but I wonder if there's a difference since the retail Sig brace includes the entire package (adapter, tube, brace) versus my DIY solution.
The AK pistol in question is from an AMD-65 kit and since it would be over 26" with a tube I'd like to make it a non-NFA "other" firearm using the classic AMD-style forward pistol grip similar to Franklin Armory's XO-series AR pistols.Last edited by chead; 12-03-2015, 2:53 PM.Originally posted by NorCalK9.comHecka funny all my friends with AR's call them "clips" but I call them bullet holder things lolOriginally posted by MikeRSo suck it HK, If I wanted an $800 pistol with a crap trigger I would just go buy 2 Glocks.Comment

In my understanding the tube would only be legal if it was used with a cheek rest or sign brace. I have a mini Draco with a folding sig brace and I love it. The issue with having the tube with no attachment is that there is no reason to have it there and could be construed a stock for that reason. On an AR it is integral to the operation so you can't say that. I may be wrong here, but I would go with some attachment to be safe. The Sig brace is legal, the Sig brace needs a tube, ergo the tube is legal when used in the brace.Comment

Us Machineguns.com sells an adapter that goes between the pistol grip and receiver.
So a permanent mod is not needed .tthey ever sell a folding one .Last edited by dozer wright; 12-03-2015, 4:38 PM.Comment

Thanks y'all, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something obvious I missed. To be clear it was built as a pistol and has always been a pistol so this would purely be a cheek rest or brace. I'll check out the US Machinegun folder!Originally posted by NorCalK9.comHecka funny all my friends with AR's call them "clips" but I call them bullet holder things lolOriginally posted by MikeRSo suck it HK, If I wanted an $800 pistol with a crap trigger I would just go buy 2 Glocks.Comment
