.22 Mag upper? That would be cool!

Is there one? I guess not, we probably would of heard of it here by now. I would get one of those in a heartbeat. Still cheap to shoot, more power than .22 LR and usefull for varmints.

no cheaper than 223 to shoot.

Not unless your lower were marked "22LR".

This is grey area, and the moment you took your rimfire upper off the pistol-gripped lower w/open magwell you could be in trouble.

AKs are different because the serialized receiver and action type (rimfire vs centerfire, semiauto vs manually cycled) are all-in-one.

Why not just blind pin the upper on?

Put the pin in and TIG weld over the hole. Now its a married, dedicated 22 Mag or 22LR...

I'd like to see someone come out with a rimfire .223 hahaa, what a cool contraption that would be, albeit impractical at best.

How about a cartridge fired electically from the rim?

It wouldn't be a "center fire" firearm ... and could have a nice strong rim. Electical priming would mean no reloading. The cartridges could be as stong as you'd like - the Navy's 20 mm close in weapon system uses a centerfired electrical cartridge.

I suppose that it wouldn't pass the lawyer's muster ... first accidental discharge would be blamed on a cell phone.

Remington already makes the EtronX electrical ignition system.

I wonder what the ca doj thinks about those?

Is there a federal or California law that requires a AR lower to be marked as to the caliber?

Or is this done on a voluntary basis by manufacturers ?

The EtronX works pretty well. I don't know if it's in regular production anymore. The ammo is available from the factory. I don't remember how much. The EtronX is a good idea that's too far ahead of its time. For off-hand shooting and even true hardcore shooting I don't think it offers any competitive advantage so it hasn't caught on. However for special applications it is still useful. We use one in one of my research projects.

                        just won't work

Sun Devil lowers are marked only as:
                        "Caliber: Multi"

anyone own a 10/22 magnum- the nature of the casing poses problems in semi autos (for proof, look around at all of the semi 22 mags that HAVE NOT been promptly discontinued by the MFG).
The issue is that the extracting case scrapes,or rubs if you will a slight groove into the round following in the mag. this bends that round's case a little out of round (kind of a lima bean profile) that restricts the case form properly chambering- some of the time, and sometimes most of the time.
Call ruger product service- I got them to admit that an un-nerving amount of 10/22 magnums are shipped back cause they click but no fire. That click is the hammer hitting the bolt, ramming bolt and case home, but losing the necessary K energy to overcome the firing pin return spring's inertia.

require all importers and manufacturer to list the serial number and
                          1. model
                          2. caliber or gauge
                          3. name of the manufacturer and/or importer
                          4. the city and State of licensed manufacturer
                          5. the name of the country in which manufactured and/or the city and State where the importer maintains its place of business.

Bill's point about rimfire conversions is that the lower receiver is imprinted with a caliber of a center fire cartridge. Is the weapon a rim fire only or a centerfire adapted to use rim fire cartridges ?

You have some legal protection if the lower is marked .22LR/WMR. A rimfire lower that will only accept a rimfire magazine, not the standard centerfire magazine, should be out of any grey area.

This is true. That having been said, there are also folks like me.

I feel comfortable enough using 22LR in a dedicated upper which can't be removed without a hammer and punch. Only comment I've ever had from LEOs, is that it's the coolest 22 they ever saw.

                            Ceiner conversions, though, scare me.
