    Backfin Reivew

Alright, I have my Backfin and MIAD grip, and thought I'd share a few pictures and opinion.

    The fin itself.

I was less than thrilled with the 3-D printing lines. As someone already mentioned, it makes it look like a prototype. The edges along the fin also appeared rough. I tried sanding them, but this material didn't seem to sand well, so I just gave up. I was impressed at how well the fin slid onto and locked up on the actual grip. Very snug fit, it slid right on except for the last 1/4 inch, then a single thump from a rubber mallet seated it perfectly. The fin is solidly mounted. I also liked how solid the actual fin is. I have a solar tactical wrap, and the kydex material is flexible. Not so with this fin. This material is very solid and feels quite sturdy.

For me, an ambidextrous safety selector was a deal breaker. For a featureless, I want to be able to operate the selector lever with my primary hand. In this case right side of the gun. GOOD NEWS! This grip works perfectly fine with a Strike Industries 60 degree selector.

In fact, safety manipulation was far easier with this ambi safety than I hoped. Operating the right side safety with my right thumb was just as easy and efficient as your traditional left side/right thumb manipulation.

Another concern was weapon functionality using the grip. I actually think this grip makes the weapon more function than either a Solar Tactical or Hammerhead grip. Holding and controlling the weapon is very simple, and not being able to wrap the thumb around the grip is not, in my opinion, a handicap. As you can see in this picture I'm able to comfortably hold the weapon by just the grip.

And lastly; looks. I think this grip makes the weapon look as close to OEM as possible in featureless configuration.

So in summary, I think that Exile knocked it out of the park with this product.

      Thanks for the detailed review.

We've improved the manufacturing process since your fin was produced. Specifically the area under the thumbrest has a lot higher surface quality now.

PM with your order number and we'll ship out a replacement.

I wish more companies operated like you guys. Outstanding customer service
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

I apologize if this has been brought up already, in another thread you mentioned that it wont work with ambi safety levers. Does that include the battle arms development short throw? If not then how are you supposed to actuate the safety without taking your hand off fire control or use your left hand?

The BAD short throw levers work fine, as do their 45 degree selectors.

Due to overwhelming demand we are looking at tweaking the dimensions of the Thumbshelf a bit to accommodate a normal length ambi safety.

Coming soon: 3D customization for the off-side of the fin. Hit up Thingiverse.com or other 3D file repositories for ideas. If the design's license allows for commercial use we can put it on the fin.

You can also make your own 3D scans using the 123D Catch app for smartphones. Instead of a skull, put your own face on the fin. Nothing scarier than your own mug on a gun. The possibilities are endless.

This is the only thing holding me back from purchasing one. Love the idea of a thumb shelf.

Received and installed a Backfin on my Sig MCX today. Installed easily and is nice and solid, quality product.

Note to Sig Sauer MCX owners that may be thinking of adding a Backfin to their gun: You will need to find a way to support the rifles' take down detent spring.

I cut a piece of thin plastic card to shape and wedged it between the lower receiver and Magpul grip during assembly. This created a shelf that supports the spring properly.

So I probably could not do Han Solo in Carbonite?

That'd be a negative but there's nothing to preclude encapsulating yourself (via the magic of photogrammetry e.g., 123D Catch) in Carbonite.

Some news / field report on the backfin. I took it out today to use in a match. I noticed as the day went on and the gun got hot from being in the sun (I have a 3-gun type cart that the rifles hang on the side of) the backfin got increasingly loose. By the third stage of the day (about 11:30 / 80 deg) the backfin would not stay on the grip at all. I wound up using tape from my first aid kit to keep in on.

When I got home I confirmed it was the backfin and not the Magpul grip by trying the different back straps that came with the grip. It looks like in order to be safe you will need to either glue the backfin to the grip or screw it on. I decided to counter sink a screw to attach it.

Still a great product and I will be buying more of them, but I want to let people know so they don't get it trouble by accident while out at the range.

Thanks for the range report. We apologize for the product failure. Just FYI we halted production last week while we test a new high temperature polymer that just came on the market, good to 140C+ (284F) max rather than the current material's 60C (140F) max temp. When we confirm this material is suitable for manufacture of this product we will be shipping out warranty replacements to all existing Backfin customers at no charge.

We have also completed redesign of the thumbshelf to allow use of an ambi-safety.
