    Ordered an H&K MR556A1

    Hey gents,

I have a T&E MR556 coming straight from HK in the next week or so for photography purposes. The price to keep the rifle after the T&E period is simply too good to pass up but I have a few questions that I hope I can get answered. Ive photographed this rifle once before but it was a few years ago and I didnt really examine it that closely.

    1. Do CA Compliant MR556s have a pinned FH?

    2. Ive heard that they will eat all ammo however should I stay away from Tula? Ive used Tula in my other ARs with no negative side effects but given that HK doesn't sell spare barrels I just want to make sure.

    3. The new models are shipping with HKs proprietary Keymod handguard. Does anyone know for sure if the handguard is NOT compatible with regular keymod accessories?

    4. those of you who have owned this rifle for a while, what are your thoughts? How is everything holding up?

    1) not sure
    2) why would you put steel through such an expensive AR? would you put economy gasoline in a Ferrari?
    3) if it's keymod it should be compatible but then again it's HK and they hate you
    4) I went with LWRCi for a piston AR in 2011. both proprietary but HK has a non-chrome-lined barrel, weird take down pins, and that tool in the buttstock. if given the choice, I'd go with LWRCi again.

A rifle that can't shoot steel is broken. If you paid a bunch of money for a broken gun, that's on you.

My HK MR556 has eaten everything I have fed it. Mine does not have the keymod rail, so can't answer that question. I own both the 556 and 762, and they hands down have the nicest fit and finish of any AR I have seen. I would go to HKPro if you have specific questions. Those guys on that site have a lot of knowledge when it come to HK's, and they have a specific forum for these rifles.

Its so clear to me now lol !

As far as the quirks of the gun, plenty of hks dont have chrome lining and the barrels are just fine. The take down pins can be replaced and so can the stock. Ive humped around the beat the crap out of the M27 IAR for a few years now and those guns are just as solid as the first day we recieved them. I know the MR556 isnt the M27 but its very similar in its tolerances and built quality IMO. The price point is definitely high but im getting the rifle for well under dealer price so its not even a factor for me.

Thanks for the info. Ill try asking them. Are your rifles in Cali? Did they come with a pinned muzzle device?

if the barrel is less than 16" without a muzzle device, it will be pinned and welded.

I bought them in CA, but they are both in AZ now. I am not sure if the FH's are pinned. I won't be back out there for about 10 days.

No that's not a CA requirement its another ban state I want to say NY or somewhere else

                    2. Ive heard that they will eat all ammo however should I stay away from Tula? Ive used Tula in my other ARs with no negative side effects but given that HK doesn't sell spare barrels I just want to make sure.

I'm sure it will eat any ammo its a very reliable firearm. I simply wouldn't shoot any bi-metal bullets through the barrel because it will accelerate the erosion of the throat and rifling. Steel cased ammo isn't the issue its the bullets. Steel cased ammo doesn't seal as well and it doesn't bounce back to original size as well as brass but it should run fine in any weapon.

                    3. The new models are shipping with HKs proprietary Keymod handguard. Does anyone know for sure if the handguard is NOT compatible with regular keymod accessories?

There's no reason for it not to be compatible with an open source product like keymod.

                    4. those of you who have owned this rifle for a while, what are your thoughts? How is everything holding up?

I haven't owned one but did see some info about the barrels wearing really fast and start keyholing within 10k rounds while regular CL AR barrels wouldn't keyhole into the 80k-100k round mark.

The posting that circulated a few weeks ago by the Guys that own Battlefield Vegas said that he was pissed because the barrel started keyholing at less than 10k rounds. Granted this was 10k of full auto but psa/in barrels were lasting 4-5 times longer.

If your gun cant run steel case ammo then its a POS.
