Long Range Shooting Question?

How do you guys calculate bullet drop in relation to Humidity, Temperature and Altitude???

I cannot find anything that clearly says how to do that.

I bought that long range shooting program from www.shootready.com and it goes over ballistics, but doesn't explain how to calculate for it. Though it does show a few tables but nothing you can keep at your desk or take with you to the range.

I would think they would have a slide rule type contraption you could use that would allow you to see what effects if any weather was going to have on your shot. Sort of like the E6B flight computer for pilots, shown below.



Anyone know of such a thing???

And hows your luck with that program. ive gott he demo book marked but i cant seem to figure out the mil dot system. it just doesnt make sense to me.

Actually, I open it twice, and use the training section on one side of the screen with the target and scope open on the other side. That way I can go over those sections of wind or mils calculations that I might of forgot. That's been the best way to use it for me. The program is great because you get to practice dialing everything in over and over again, without going anywhere. All you needs is a pencil and paper next to you.... I would recommend it.

I'm hitting the target more often than not, and do get it on the second shot most of the time, if I manage to miss on the first; really depends on range. It gets real iffy past 700 yards (.308) with wind and drop when the altitude, temperature, and humidity are a lot different then what the gun was zeroed to. Which is why I'm asking for help.

Though I'm just starting to use it... The mils don't seem to be a big deal after a little practice... seems to be something that will become second nature with practice.

+1 ... memorize your dope out to 600. The rest is practice, practice, practice. Oh and ... practice.

There is a a real good program for the palm pilot pocket SSF its a good program and one more thing its free, there is also EXBAL and I think Horus has a program also. These last 2 not free.

The FM23-10 field manual has thumbrules for humidity and temp. They're for the .308 173gr m118, but they'll be decent for anything remotely similar (probably not .50Cal or any of the super whamo-dyne magnums or LR specialty cartridges).

I'm a highpower shooter, so elevation is fairly simple and I have a couple simple thumbrules for wind at 600yds that I fudge if I need to for 200 and 300. I don't sweat humidity as I can't measure it and haven't seen that it matters; at least not with iron sights.

+1 As its self, humidity is not much of a factor but add temp and altitude and you get air density, the denser the air the more drag and drag does matter. The formulas and the BC will get you in the ballpark the one I use gets you better seats. But as its been hammered to death on this riflemans forum , KNOW YOUR RIFLE, and to do that you need lots of dates at the range.
