    223 vs 5.56 for plinking/practice

Right now there is a lot of deals for these calibers. I own an AR15 and I'm curious to hear if anyone would choose a 223 round over a 5.56 for plinking with this particular rifle.

Let's say for argument purposes the price per round is the exact same. And both were brass etc.

    Thoughts?

.223 (in my experience) is typically of higher quality than 5.56, so for wasting time and having fun, I would (and do) use 5.56.

If you just want to put holes in paper or make splats on steel, .223 all day.

If you want to stockpile it, 5.56, but not any junk 5.56, it needs to be real m193, m855, ss109, mk262 (was it?), or other government spec loads. Sealed bullets and primers, hard primers, all that good stuff...

If they're the same price, get the 556 so any leftovers are actually worth keeping. It's more utilitarian.

I prefer m193 myself because it's cheaper than m855 or high quality 223, bUT still pereforms well all around. I need to pass it over the chrono, but wolf gold is supposed to be m193 (and it works well in my gun). Freedom 223 only hits 2825fps in my 16" barrel, but shoots plenty accurate so I'll still buy that too.

Edit: to what barrage said... good 223 will be better, but I don't think he really means bulk ammo. Stuff like Hornady TAP will of course be good, but bulk 223 will never give you the same performance as 556. Quality 556 still isn't designed to be that accurate, so 223 will surpass it there. As a cartridge to kill bipedal apes, 556 is a much better choice.

Is Federal XM193AF90 considered worth while stocking? Or it is considered bulk for plinking.

When it comes to stockpiling I think the M855 is the way to go. I heard SS109 is the same just no green tip?

California might soon ban the M855 so that's what I stockpile.

I started this thread because the deal on SS109 5.56 is $.30/rd and Wolf Gold 223 is also $.30/rd. Im having a hard time deciding what to pick [emoji16]

I've always had incredible luck with freedom munitions new .223.

The problem with M855/SS109 is that you can't shoot it at any of the ranges in many places because they only let you shoot non-magnetic ammo.

Works for both. M193 clones from most U.S. makers such as Federal, Lake City, Remington, Winchester, etc. are all GTG. Buy whatever works best in your rifles, and buy it cheap, stack it deep.

It shows 399.60 for me. I knew it was too good to be true.

I find 223 cheaper so that's what I run, around $300 for 1k of brass and $220 for wolf steel. 556 cost to much for me and there's far more options in 223 such as bullet weight for the same cost.

It was cheaper. They just increased the price

Yeah. I feel like if I'm gonna buy 5.56 for 40+ cpr shipped, might as well get adi 69 SMK for a little more. Steel for plinking and general use is g2g for me. Gongs don't know the difference

That's why I like wolf gold. It's damn near m193, but priced like medium quality .223 and it seems to perform as such in the accuracy department. I also like that's it's not magnetic. I have no issues with steel case or bimetal bullets, I just can't shoot them at iron sights or on the steel at pala. I haven't seen bulk steel case with non-ferrous bullets or I'd buy it.

I don't really want to stock bulk .223 (example freedom reloads), as a badguy/"zombie" ammo because of it's very limited effective range. I'd invest in m855 but I can't shoot it anywhere! So it leaves me with m193 and wolf gold...

                              Hopefully that makes sense.
