    7.62 AR?

Hello. I am still in the research and planing stages of building my first AR. I am looking at building a mid range ported 16" flat top upper. Free floating hand rails if possible. Fixed mag with a BB and all the "evil" goodies. I had a few questions i woiuld like to ask before i continue to plan the build.

    1. Would it be cheaper for me to just buy a complete upper with barrell, rails, sights, bolt carrier, ext or just build it myself? I am very mechanical and have seen the videos on brownings website and it looks very simple. It would also give me a better understanding of the rifle. I just dont know if it would be cheaper to build it myslef and if so, how much would i "actually" save if i did? I think it would be better, but i would be affraid of not ordering all of the parts needed to complete the rifle and screw myself on shipping charges haveing to re-order .

    2. Looking at the prices of ammo and how high they have gotten, i was looking at the option of a AR chambered for 7.62, mainly because the ammo seems to be $0.20 cents or so cheaper per round that 5.56 or .223 ammo. Any personal advice or experiance with this? What about price difference, more or less? Harder to find parts? Would a standard OOL used on a 5.56 work, or different parts kit need?

    3. Also, on the topic of 30rd mags. I dont remember the date off hand, but from how i remember, if they were purchased before certain date, they are CA legal. Please correct me if i am remembering wrongly. If true, how do you show proof that you owned that mag before the date?

Thanks in advance for any replys,

Everything is scarce right now. Buy what you can get. You aren't going to get any 'deals' right now.

I assume you are talking about 7.62x39 and not 7.62x51 (308) It should be obvious to you that there are different parts required for a 7.62x39. There are several manufacturers that make 7.62x39 uppers. I will leave it to others to provide you the links. Or you could actually take a little initiative and use GOOGLE.COM

10+ capacity magazines could be purchased, sold, transferred, etc in CA prior to 1/1/2000. Starting 1/1/2000 you are prohibited from selling, transferring, giving, lending, etc 10+ capacity magazines in CA. With regard to proving you had them, WTH are you talking about? Since when do you have to prove anything? Possession of high capacity magazines is not regulated. If a DA thinks you broke the law by illegally importing, transferring, giving, lending, etc a high capacity magazine, they must prove it.
Thanks in advance for any replys,

      Thanks for your reply,

I know prices are high, i plan on letting them come down before i start ordering anything, i was just wondering if anyone has build an upper totally from scratch and if so, would it have been cheaper to do so.

Yes i am talking about the 7.62X39 round, and i have GOOGLED many sites on these uppers. Just looking for some personal insite from users of these uppers. I know there is conversions to be done in the upper, but was wondering about the lower reciver and what parts would need to be changed. Havent found much info on the lower conversion yet.

As far as the high cap mags go, I was just under the impression that hypotheticly ,"if" i got my hands on one, would i need to prove that i had it in my posession before 1/1/2000 and if so, how could i.

      Thanks again for the reply..

        I ordered http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/S...pper_Half.html
They have it in stock, but backlogged on shipping.

The ammo is even cheaper, if you do not mind cleaning up after every shooting session.

The postmarked box that it came in and the sales receipt would be a real good start.

I have a bunch of hicap mags that I bought back in 1999.
Many of them are still in the boxes and I have all the receipts.
I don't think there could be any question about my owning them prior to 2000.

Thanks, Im sure its not worth the hassle of haveing to worry if i would be walking a thin line because a 10rnd mag is plenty fine for me. Just wondering if i happen to find a high cap lying on the ground somewhere and happend to pick it up , would i have to prove i owned it before 2000. I would be fine with plain jane 10 rounds though.

This site does not condone illegal activity nor should anyone advise you about how to break the law and get away with it, even "hypotheticly."

If you didn't "get your hands on them" before 1/1/2000, then for all intents and purposes at this point in time, you can't legally get them. I for one will not help you fool people about how you broke the law.

If you truly did just find one somewhere (in CA), it would be legal for you to possess (there is no law against finding them).

Even if you had them pre-ban or "found" them, it is illegal to use standard capacity mags in rifles equipped with a bullet button.

                  Bingo.

You can have as many 30rd mags as you want and you don't need to prove a damn thing.

But you CANNOT use them in a bullet-button AR. They can only be used in featureless (MMG/U15, no flash hider, etc) AR's.

If you're using a bullet-button you HAVE to use 10rd or less mags.

I didnt mean to upset anyone, just a curious mind. like i said, i am fine with standard mags, and will be useing them, i just was looking for a little more info on the high caps. Didnt mean to seem like i was fishing for loop holes, i just know someone who has a few and was willing to give me one. Didnt want to accept if i would infringe on the laws.

So never mind about the highcaps, but i would still like any info on the good/bad of home building an upper and the good/bad of a 7.62 chambered AR.

Again, didnt mean to get into a touchy subject with the mags issue.

Ammo price is not the best reason to pick a caliber for your rifle.
What are you going to use it for?

Plinking, and maybe some deer hunting. I just love going takeing my rifles out to the woods or the range and shooting all day and i hate to pay the inflated price of 5.56 rounds when there seems to be a ton of surplus 7.62 on the web. Id rather not do a .22 cal for my first AR, i would like a larger rifle, more of a authentic feel to it. Then maybe a .22 to take out to the woods ext..
