I have both, and there is no difference except the barrel and lowers; why the SOCOM is more expensive and in demand is the roll make. A lot of people are using the lower to make Mk18 or M4A1 Block 1.5/Block 2 clones. Right now Colt has stopped making the 6920 SOCOM and is no longer in their catalog. The 6920 comes with a Magpul rear BUIS, and the SOCOM comes with a Matech BUIS. Another difference besides the KAC RIS rails on the SOCOM is it comes with a side mounted sling attachment, while the standard 6920 comes with a sling swivel attached to the bottom of the FSB.

I changed out the barrel of my SOCOM to a Colt 14.5" SOCOM barrel with permanent flash hider to be the correct M4A1 1.5 Clone. The spare Colt barrel I will use for a featureless build.

I just think the M4 carbine hand guard length just looks silly with a 16" barrel. So I built another upper with a 15" free floating MLOK rail. I still have the complete 6920 upper.

I found a source for the Colt ambi semi auto safety selectors that come standard on the Colt socom I and II in case you go the regular 6920 route and still want the Colt ambi safety. Here you go.

Depending on how you want to use your rifle or how much it matters to you, I find that my SOCOM barrel is more accurate than my M4 profile barrel(s), even with standard M193. The question of whether 1-2 MOA vs 2-3 MOA really matters is up to you.

The SOCOM barrel is 4 ounces heaver than a M4 profile. I find the weight is a little farther back, so it's not as noticeable as 4 ounces more towards the end of the barrel. Also something to keep in mind... A 16" M4 profile is the same weight as a 14.5" SOCOM, and I'd argue the 14.5" SOCOM balances a little better. But again, how much that matters is up to you.

FWIW, I also find there to be just about zero POI shift when I put a can on a SOCOM barrel compared to a M4 profile, but I understand that's not necessarily the priority here.

Unless you are looking to build a m4clone you can go with the 6920LE or even a 6920 OEM. If you plan on building a clone and want to have the appropriate clone points you need the socom for the M4A1 marked lower that also says colt defense on it.

OP, there is a great deal on an M4 6920 in the market place right now for $700. Includes an A4 carry handle sight and the colt/Rodgers super stock which if you don't like can sell pretty quick if priced right. I can't link it cause I'm on Tapatalk.

Just buy a Colt OEM2. I think RifleGear has them. And put the rail of your choice on it.
