    Saiga Buttstock Look in Question

    Howdy,

I am sure that I am not the only one who thinks the factory buttstocks on the Saiga's are SINFULLY UGLY! The factory buttstock on a Saiga just looks SO out of place like it was found in a parts bin and slapped on. I was thinking of trying something different to get over the UGLINESS without converting to a pistol grip setup which will defeat the ability of using my preban mags (bullet guide or modded preban mag). Actually, from the trigger guard back it looks odd.

Below are a couple of 'Shoped ideas that came to mind duing my quest to enhance the look.

As you are aware the bottom image is of a factory box stock Saiga for comparison while the first image on top uses a standard AK buttstock. This setup seems usable with the Saiga trigger group and I would imaging that shooting it would feel similar to a lever Marlin or Winchester with a straight stock.

The center image blew me away. All I did was flow the lines between the factory stock and the rear of the cover and presto! That look is perfect! Just how it should have came from the factory. I wonder if this can be achieved with some plastic, a little fitting, and a bit of effort. I will have to look into it.

What are some of your suggestions? Opinions?

factory does not look bad , I would say if posible, get a feel for it, I rather have something that is ugly but feels & handles good VS something that looks good but handles ugly, IMHO of course.

The middle one looks like the Saiga 100, sort of.

That looks good too! Too bad it is off of a different receiver, although it may provide a good base.

BTW, does anyone have an example (PICS Please) of the first setup with an AK buttstock and factory Saiga trigger along with a range report on how it feels when shooting it? Thanks!

Here are some pics I have saved.

This belongs to someone on CGN I think, IIRC he said the ergonomics were fine.

This is the factory wood .308, it seems to be a popular upgrade from the factory plastic. Might look good in black.

And this is one of the custom options from BattleRifleG3. I think that when I get mine I am going to make one inspired by this, but a little more tacticool.

I can't believe you are obsessing over the minutia of how the stock looks. Is it comfortable? The right length? Shoot it. I had to laugh when I looked at the middle and bottom pics because they are almost identical. I laughed even harder when you said the difference "blew you away."

FWIW, the AK stock on the Saiga looks awful and will probably not give you a proper cheek weld or length of pull since it was designed to be used in concert with a pistol grip and hence, a different hold.

I think the factory stock works fine and looks ok. I wanted to be able to used my modded preban Hi-Caps and have rock solid AK reliability. Also the best thing about the Saiga is that its all new parts not surplus.

Thank you for posting the pictures. That is just what I am looking for!

Thank You too ohsmily. I am glad I got you to laugh. I am also glad you take function over form, but as I said earlier it would be nice to have both. If there is absolute harm over this that I cannot seem to forsee, please do let me know. The center example did blow me away because all it took was a simple stroke of color in Photoshop to give the Saiga just the right touch (to me). I do appreciate your input as well.

I am going to be modifying the front of mine as soon as I get it, thinking of milling some slots and adding rails to it.
may make a sheet metal front if I can secure it w/o touching the barrel

Looks like your proposed stock would make removing the cover a PITA.

Its funny this thread came up when it did.

Literally just yesterday, I got some new wood furniture, and I think its a drastic improvement to the rifle. I hated that hollow feeling that the black synthetic furniture had, plus it was pretty ugly too. The wood has a nice heft to it, but it doesn't seem to add any overall weight to the rifle...

I wanna eventually sand it down and re-stain it something much darker...like black or ebony...but I wanna keep the wood grain predominantly visible too...
